My next resource is a power point on Play therapy and the use of it with patients with Dementia/Alzheimer’s Disease. The power point shows the comparison between Children and Adult activities. I have used most of these activity ideas as a psychiatric nurse for 14 years.

This is a power point that I wrote for a conference for Nurse Practitioners. It is generally how to use Art and Music therapy with Dementia/Alzheimer’s patients, but other geriatric psychiatric patients like the ideas as well.

This resource is for an American history class dealing with colonization. There will be a brief reading and then a few questions that can be either a study guide or a quiz on the material. This material is from the textbook ‘Rise of the American Nation Volume One’. This is for grades 9 and 10. Chapter One- Europeans Settle in the New World (1450-1624) Who are these famous people? Europeans, Spaniards, and British. The building of the colonies started with what was called the ‘Invincible Armada’. Why is the date 'Saturday, July 30, 1588 important? This was when the first battle of the New World between the Spaniards and the British out on the ocean. Now the teacher can find and discuss various kinds of ships and discuss the British lighter type vessel and the Spaniards larger ships. The teacher can start a discussion on battle strategy for how confident the Spaniards were feeling, but how the English were able to move more swiftly out of range of the Spaniards guns and boats. They wanted hand to hand combat but the English know they were outnumbered and out gunned and they did not want a frontal attack. The teacher can now mention a few famous people of the time period- Sir Francis Drake and Lord Howard of Effingham. Drake who has contempt for the Spaniards but was only the second in command and the leader was Lord Howard of Effingham who scorned Drake’s tactics. There is a running battle that lasted almost a week in the Harbor of Calais off the coast of France. The teacher can have a student come up to the World Map and find France then the Harbor of Calais. This battle is when the Spaniards were terrified at the sight for fire ships were bearing down on them. Now Englishmen and the ‘Invincible Armada’ where the English gunners paired boardside to broadside. The results showed what was left of the Spanish fleet who fled to the North around Scotland turned South for a storm came up and wrecked many of the remaining vessels and then returned to Spain. This is when history makes a turn and defeat of the Spaniards and the ‘Spanish Armada’ by the Englishmen which was a decisive moment in world history. Questions Who were Sir Francis Drake and Lord Howard of Effingham? Who defeated The ‘Spanish Armada’? What was the 'Invincible Aramada? Why is the date Saturday, July 30, 1588 important? Where is the Harbor of Calais?

I recently found a vintage health book on Amazon and it is a part of a series that I used when I was in early elementary school. The activity that I am going to share with you is from the health text ‘All About You’. This was a first grade text, but with today’s children it would be perfect for pre-K and Kindergarten. Health Lesson The teacher will need toys, puppets and/or stuffed animals and dolls to complete this activity discussion. Gather the children in a circle on their mats and ask them ‘What is work?’ The teacher can share with the children the definition we learned as students ‘Play is a child’s work.’ The teacher will have all the chosen toys just laying around on the floor then the teacher will ask the children how do we get these toys to do something. The teacher could ask other questions like ‘What does your dad do for work?’ or ‘What does your mom do for work?’ ‘What is work?’ ‘Is work healthy for you or anybody?’ Once again the teacher can ask the children ‘How do children work?’ All the answers to the questions will vary. Ask each child to pick a toy and then tell them to make them do something like make the toy dance, jump or kick a ball. Explain to the child that them trying to make the toys do something is work. Maybe not like your dad and mom, but it is work. Cognitive domain: The children will learn that play and work are different yet the same. Affective domain: The children will get a sense that work can be fun and lets them express themselves in many ways. Psychomotor domain: The children will play ‘Work’ with the toys to make them to things.
