Mnemonics are tools that aid memory. The aim of mediamnemonics is to generate a range of mnemonics specifically designed to make media revision far more effective. Tried and tested on Year 11 students at an Essex academy, they have been created by an experienced media teacher with 22 years of media subject leadership who holds an MA in Film and TV studies. English resources have been created by a teacher with 16 years of teaching experience in a secondary school.

This easy to follow PowerPoint demonstrates the power of mnemonics in a very practical and dramatic way. In one 45 - 60 minute lesson, students will amaze themselves with how well they can remember the 17 battles in the Wars of the Roses (in the correct order!), as well as the names and colours of the two families, and the century they took place in. This tried and tested lesson never fails to convince students about the power of mnemonics. One student recently went from 6/22 to 21/22 in one 45 minute lesson.

This simple zombie-themed card game has been developed to help make learning times-tables fun!
The times-table facts have been divided into three sets of colour-coded cards based upon their level of difficulty.
Students choose or are allocated their difficulty level and given a set time to try and destroy all 12 of the zombies in their set. They do this by giving the correct answer to the times-table sum shown on the card, causing the 'zombie' to be discarded. If they get it wrong, the zombie returns to the deck to be encountered again and again until it is destroyed - unless the time runs out!
A simple, fun way to get students revising the times tables facts. Also, great for differentiation as the teacher can set the difficulty level and time.
The 36 cards are provided on A4 sheets so will need printing back to back, or gluing together. An instruction sheet written for students is also provided. The 1 x, 2 x, 5 x, and 10 x tables are not included as the game is designed to improve recall of the more challenging time table facts.

2 PowerPoints provide detailed case studies of gender representation in a TV commercial and a DVD cover. Both are 'rich texts' and lend themselves very well to analysis. A 3rd PowerPoint helps students learn to analyse by using the 'red-green system', which emphasises denotation and connotation when writing about media texts. 2 hours plus teaching in 3 easy to use PowerPoints.
In this detailed PowerPoint lesson, the concept of gender representation is introduced and then applied to The Adjustment Bureau DVD cover.
Using the mnemonic GILT (graphics, image, layout and text) the front and back cover are deconstructed, with detailed notes provided that suggest what sort of observations students should be making. These are presented using the 'red-green' system, a handy way of ensuring students analyse rather than just describe. The lesson ends with an essay title that requires students to apply what they have learned.
This would be an ideal way of demonstrating the theory in action, as the chosen contemporary text is an excellent example of gender stereotyping. This PowerPoint would be suitable as an hour long lesson.
