50 Artists Primary pupils should know

(0)
Famous Western Artists Primary K-6 pupils should know. By this I mean that they should have seen images by these artists and remember key details about when and where they lived. These artists could support work done in other subject areas. All dates are approximate. It is not suggested that Primary K-6 students should know every artist on this list, but rather that they should know and understand the main movements and how art has changed. There is a great activity I have written that does this called my art timeline game which is available to download free from my website. There are also too many brilliant artists not mentioned here that I have omitted to keep things simple. By the time we get to Contemporary art you can pretty much choose what you like! The resource contains a link to all the images you need via Google Art Institute.

This exciting project is a new slant on the traditional 'identity' project used in many school art departments, except this version does not depend on the ability to draw a self portrait, but rather uses found objects and symbolism to create deep, meaningful pieces of art. What's more, the project embeds cross-curricular learning, integrating Religious Education themes on identity with Mathematics of Net Making and construction of 3D shapes. The download contains a full Scheme of Work and four PowerPoint presentations as well as photocopiable NET templates, artist links and student examples to help you. This was one of my favourite projects as a teacher!

Advanced 4th Drawing Stage

Advanced Stage drawing has been designed for students approx 13-16 years or those who would assess their current ability as: “I’m quite good at drawing, I draw often, but I want to improve so that I can draw and shade difficult things.” At this level of drawing you are challenged to construct, measure, shade and draw a more complex group of objects, rendering shading and detail with greater accuracy and precision. By the end of this stage students should be fully confident in drawing from observation and will only need to practise those skills further. The download contains: Advanced Measuring exercises, Advanced Shading exercises, Complex Drawing video (20 mins Plus assessment sheets. For those who would assess their current ability as: “I can draw the basics ok, such as drawing outlines of shapes, but I need help with some areas such as how to shade etc.” Here I show you how to combine geometry, measuring and shading skills from the first two stages into observational drawing of simple still life shapes. Intermediate Stage is for more advanced Primary Middle school students or Secondary Junior High to develop into observational drawing. This stage is a significant step towards understanding observational drawing. The download contains: Shading a bottle from observation, basic Measuring, Drawing and seeing details, practical exercises in Observational Drawing. Plus worksheets and assessment sheets. Foundation 1st Drawing Stage

(0)
A comprehensive introduction for those who are at the very beginning stage of drawing and would assess their current ability as: 'I can't even draw a stick man!' The download contains video tutorials, presentations and exercises. As its name suggests, Foundation pre-stage drawing is the level I would place people on who are complete novices. Contained in these tutorials are lessons about how to shade simple shapes, some basic drawing tips and your very first drawing lessons for the stick man artists out there. Typically, students working at this stage will be aged 7-9 or completely lack the confidence to draw anything. The download contains: Basic Tips in drawing, Drawing Simple Shapes, Shading Part 1a; Flat tones, Shading Part 1b; Light to Dark, Cartoon Drawing. Also provided are worksheets, baseline test and assessment sheets. Contains 5 Windows format videos, 5 Powerpoint presentations and a fully illustrated marking sheet. This is an NSEAD recommended resource.

Baseline assessment for Art

I've revised and updated my baseline test to include measuring across the four main attainment areas of Making Skills, Ideas, Knowledge and Evaluation. My test takes only one lesson to complete plus one homework task and marking is done in the lesson itself. I've used this test for years and I know it works well. I was a member of the NSEAD Curriculum Writing Group that wrote the curriculum competencies, more formally called the: 'Framework for Progression, Planning for Learning, Assessment, Recording and Reporting 2014.’ For more fantastic art resources visit my TES store https://www.tes.com/teaching-resources/shop/paulcarney700

I designed this scheme of work nearly ten years ago and it is still as interesting and exciting now as it was then. It combines brilliantly with science lessons about life on other planets. It teaches young people how to design within design constraints, use their imagination and think about how different life evolves. Use it with my Alien Landscape project to get the full effect.
Tony Craggs KS1 Mural project

Tony Craggs KS1 Mural project

(0)
This 3D sculpture unit focuses on creating a whole class 3D mural in the style of contemporary artist Tony Cragg whilst at the same time teaching colour theory and craft techniques. It develops visual literacy and the ability to analyse art work and incorporates three different ways of making the final piece from cheap, common everyday items. It is slightly more expensive due to copyright royalties of Tony's work, but you will have a great school mural at the end of it. It comes with a student booklet, photocopiable resources, presentation, lesson plan and templates for making a large classroom art piece.
