Maths Department Handbook proforma

(0)
This is a comprehensive Maths Department Handbook proforma containing 66 pages that can be easily adapted for the needs of any secondary Maths department. It has been reviewed as part of my school's external inspection process and was cited as exemplary. I hope you find it useful. Obviously many sections, such as assessment, homework, behavioural policy, available resources, are specific to my school, and would need some amendment. Other sections, such as G&T policies, Calculation policy, Literacy policy, Use of ICT and Calculators, use of learning support etc should provide a good foundation for departments to personalise. It includes descriptors for the new GCSE specification 9 -1 grades.

Bearings

Bearings

(0)
This is a series of 6 pages that can be printed as an A3 folded booklet for teaching students how to work out bearings. The first page provides a starter which revisits key angle facts based on parallel lines and a transversal, and based on angles on a straight line, at a point and in a triangle. The second page presents the key learning objectives and a section in which notes can be written. This is followed by a simple Task 1 of using bearings diagrams to work out the bearings of one point from another point using angle calculations, rather than scale drawing. Task 2 then requires students to draw diagrams first based on the information provided, and then to work out the required bearing. The lesson sits comfortable in an hour lesson with time for a plenary.

Worksheet comprising 4 sections to build understanding of direct and indirect (or inverse) proportion. Plenty of practice available to keep students occupied and to challenge students to ensure they are able to tackle problems successfully. This worksheet comprises 3 sections over 3 pages with an answer sheet on the fourth page. It can be printed to a single A3 folded booklet. Section A provides 20 function machines with up to 3 operations to be converted into equations. An example is provided first. Section B provides 12 equations with up to 3 steps to be converted into function machines. An example is provided first. Section C provides 18 functions to be converted into function machines so that inverse function machines can be drawn, and finally the inverse function can be written. The sections contain plenty of practice and will provide at least 2 to 3 lessons of independent study. Each section is intended to develop student understanding towards the ability to write inverse functions. The relationship between a function and its inverse can then be discussed.

This resource is accompanied by an answer document. It is aimed at students who have been taught perimeter, area and volume. The questions include work on circles and the need to apply Pythagoras correctly within context. A grading system based on the new GCSE specification is suggested, but this resource would be equally useful in the US. The paper can be printed onto a single A3 folded sheet and there are a total of 60 marks. It can be used as a homework or a revision resource, or to assess general understanding at the end of the topic with plenty of extension and differentiated content available.
