I am an avid fan of inquiry based learning. Having taught for 23 years, mostly with the International Baccalaureate's Primary Years Programme, I have discovered that children love to be an interactive part of their own learning. The products in my store are engaging and hands on, promoting inquiry, critical thinking, research and communication skills. You can find more tips and tools on my blog too. Enjoy! Susan

Ancient Civilizations Inventors Extraordinaire IB PYP Unit of Inquiry

Take the children back in time. Be the Miss Frizz of your classroom with this complete IB PYP unit of inquiry. Where We Are in Place and Time: Ancient Civilizations contributed to today’s society. This is one of my favourite social studies units of inquiry. By delving back in time, thousands and thousands of years, the children can explore the concept of time and exactly how life was like back in time, how the ancient inventions brought change to society and how they have impacted our life today. I have taught this unit of inquiry for 5 years, with both 3rd grade and 5th grade. Each time, I find that it is one of my favourite. There is so much to explore. With over 100 pages of interactive, hands on , engaging, inquiry based activities, this transdisciplinary unit will take you through math, science, geography, reading for information and, of course, history. As we travelled through time with our toilet paper timeline, we explored the cradle of civilization: The Mesopotamians. From there, we travelled into North Africa to visit the Ancient Egyptians. The inquiries came flooding fast and furiously as we learned more and more about how people lived way back then through hands on technology experiments, design experiments, research, communication and much ,much more. How do they sail back up the river? How did they move such enormous rocks to build the pyramids? How did the wheel begin? How do scientists come up with ideas? Who invented math? How did our writing evolve from their symbols of writing? Why do they have different gods? What happened to their gods? Learning how to read clues from artefacts and also from evidence in the text, helped us to become incredible historians as we had to figure out the source of ancient artwork. This involved a lot of reading for information, analysing text and recognising non fiction text features. Through explorations within math, reading, writing, geography, history and art, the children gather knowledge of how ancient civilizations developed and contributed to societies today. If you enjoy this complete unit of inquiry, you may also like my others: Revolutionaries, Rainforests and Food Chains, Adaptations of Living Things, Exploring poetry, Exploring Explorers and many more found in my blog store. Take the children to the centre of the Earth! Be the Miss Frizz of your classroom with this complete earth science, IB PYP unit of inquiry. How the World Works: Central idea: The Earth’s structure is constantly changing through processes and forces that can impact society. This unit is all about the amazing moving and shaking of our Earth’s surface, as we explore the science behind plate tectonics and how the processes under the Earth lead to the movement and changing of our world as we know it, how landforms are created and the cycle of the Earth’s life is at the hands of erosion and deposition. Go back 200 million years and explore Pangaea and make the connections between the world then and now. With over 140 pages of interactive, science foldables, flippables, hands on , engaging, inquiry based activities, this transdisciplinary unit will take you through math, critical thinking, writing, geography, reading for information and, of course, science. UK & USA spelling included. Lines of inquiry include: How is the Earth structured? How does the Earth’s crust move and separate? What causes different landforms? How do the changes in Earth’s surface impact humans? What tools do scientists use to detect and protect from potential natural disasters? A week long, collaborative summative assessment is an inquiry based project involving a mystery island that must be explored, researched and prepared for populating. The children are required to use their knowledge over the course of the unit, work as a team and present their findings, hypotheses and designs. Learning how to read clues from artefacts and also from evidence in the text, helped us to become incredible geologists as we had to figure out the answers to our lines of inquiry. This involved a lot of reading for information, analysing text and recognising non fiction text features. Through explorations within math, reading, writing, geography and history, the children gather knowledge of how plate tectonics contribute to how our world is shaped today. If you enjoy this complete unit of inquiry, you may also like my others: Ancient Civilizations, Rainforests and Food Chains, Adaptations of Living Things, Exploring Poetry, Exploring Explorers and many more found in my store and on my blog. Global Thinkers are internationally minded. They are knowledgeable about the world that they live in. They ask questions about the world. They are knowledgeable about different cultures and their traditions.. They are open-minded to the differences in our world. This inquiry based activity was designed for 3rd-6th grades to learn about the world through their flags, using the IB PYP Learner Profile and Key Concepts as the focus of thinking. USA &UK spelling. The activity takes the form of a Global Passport. The pages can be mixed and matched and created into a booklet. Easy to differentiate. As the flags are introduced to the children, they will complete the pages of the passport, developing their research skills and knowledge of the countries in question. This can be completed over the course of the school year as flags are introduced, as a collaborative group/partner activity within another unit of inquiry, independent homework assignment or a geography and mapping activity. The options are endless. Included: 10 mix and match, print and go pages Front and back cover for the Global Passport Log for recording countries explored. Certificate of completion for Global Thinkers A whole class activity for international mindedness Selection of 36 world flags to use as reference slides or for cutting and gluing into the passport. Teacher instructions and student’s examples. You can find many more inquiry based ideas and resources on my blog and in my store. Enjoy! Susan Powers www.PYPteachingtools.com
