IB PYP Approaches to Learning Skills Task Cards Bundle

(1)
All of the Approaches to Learning skills ( formerly transdisciplinary skills) combined with reading, speaking, listening and drama! These printable task cards are a terrific way to actively practise the growth mindset directly within the Thinking, Research, Communication, Social and Self Management skills developed within the IB PYP’S Approaches to Learning. The task cards can be used in a variety of ways that encourage the children to reflect and think positively of themselves and others in various scenarios that are easily relatable to them. They are asked to reflect on situations that require analysing, synthesising, categorising and evaluating, present doubt, possible antagonism, confidence issues and other difficulties. As you help the children with these skills in a safe, familiar environment, it will greatly benefit them throughout school and particularly as they approach the IB PYP Exhibition. A great review activity! Differentiated for 3rd-5th grade. UK and USA spelling. Suggestions: Whole class - sitting in circle, each child will have a card to read aloud and then share their opinion. These can be discussed as you go around the circle. Teacher led – read aloud a card to a small group and have them interact with each other to solve the problem or scenario. Small groups- Place a pile of cards face down in the middle of the group. Each person will take a turn to read a card, act out or offer their opinion and then those can be discussed within the group. Independent work - Each child can work with a few cards and write or draw how they would solve the social problems presented on the task cards. You will find over 100 task cards ready to print and go. Each skill is a separate PDF within a zip file. You can purchase them separately but with this bundle you save! And you get the entire set of classroom posters explaining the skills! You can find many more tools for implementing the IB PYP within my store and on my blog. There are separate sets for big kids and also for younger kids. Enjoy! Susan Powers PYPteachingtools.com

Fun ways to encourage reflection and goal setting. Reflection can be a tricky concept to genuinely learn. Often it becomes filling out the “usual” things and is not really meaningful for the student. It aims to help them reflect upon their success as well as their challenges and to really think about how they could help themselves. Who W Are Design A T Shirt Back to School Activity

(0)
Getting to know your students with this self reflection activity is a win-win, as you encourage them to think critically about the questions in each section of their t shirt. Their thinking is recorded with drawings rather than simply written answers. The back of the t-shirt focuses specifically on Learner Profile and requires a written answer. Throw in some arts and crafts to create the head and shoulders as a self portrait and the final product is a beautifully colourful product that allows everyone to learn a bit more about one another. These look fabulous hanging from the ceiling for back to school night. UK & USA spelling included. With options for more traditional ‘getting-to-know-you” questions as well as the IB PYP transdisciplinary themes, the children have to think about what each theme means to them or how they can answer the questions, illustrating their thinking within the shape on the t shirt, which requires a bit more thought and planning. The back of the t shirt brings the vocabulary of the Learner Profile into review and requires the children to really reflect on themselves as learners. Easy to print and construct, the kids absolutely love this activity which is perfect for back to school, student led conferences and a fun reflection activity. You can find many more inquiry based tips and tools in my store and on my blog. Enjoy! Susan Powers PYPteachingtools.com

100 Acts of Kindness Challenge and Craftivity

(0)
Random acts of kindness brought into the classroom. What a wonderful way to celebrate the love in our world as we lead up to Valentine’s Day, yet can be done all year round too. Can you reach 100 acts of kindness and pin 100 Kindness coupons to your wall within the time frame? For each act of kindness witnessed, the children will complete a Kindness coupon for the person who was kind and the coupon is attached to the wall/chart. This 12 printable packet provides the tools to implement an idea that has been going around for quite a few years. 100 Acts of Kindness is a classroom challenge that brings a great awareness into the children’s minds, that it is absolutely wonderful to share caring and love. As the compliments are handed out and the kindness coupons are added to our wall, we can see exactly how much love we bring into the lives of others and, in turn, into our own. The children are able to see, by sharing, that when we show love to others, we feel the love within ourselves. This challenge is designed to be completed within 20 -25 days. ( I usually implement it beginning on Martin Luther King Junior day, and we end it with a Valentines Day celebration. You can do it any time of the year, of course. You will find: • Kindness Coupons to print , that the students will complete as they see acts of kindness being carried out. These are used to track our challenge. • Compliment Coupon: To be completed and handed, or left anonymously, to the recipient. • Quilt tiles: create a classroom Kindness Quilt with the quilt tiles. I like to brainstorm as many words as possible that mean caring and love and gratitude. We write the word in the centre of our tile, colour and display. These activities are perfect for demonstrating and practising the IB PYP Learner Profile traits of Caring, Balanced and Principled, together with the IB Attitudes of Appreciation, Empathy and Cooperation. Enjoy as you help to spread the love!  Susan

IB PYP Learner Profile Watercolour Posters with Positive Affirmations

IB PYP Learner Profile Watercolour Posters with Positive Affirmations

(0)
These beautiful watercolour posters contain the ever powerful words, “ I AM “ and they are designed around the IB PYP and MYP Learner Profile. They are designed to act as a reference point of the attributes of the Learner Profile, rather than descriptors. ( If you’d like this design as posters for your classroom, I also have a set where the children will create the descriptors themselves, for each attribute, as a part of their learning and reflection of their own Learner Profile. You can find the editable version for that resource here. ) These contain all of the IB Learner Profile attributes for both the PYP and the MYP, including options of risk taker/courageous and thinker/global thinker. The posters come in full size and half size. In addition, there are many more positive affirmations that were created by my fifth graders through their own reflections and for the benefit of other kids out there such as: I am enough I am strong I am a great friend etc. There are a couple of editable sheets in a separate file for you to add your own affirmations as you see fit. Included are mirror-image posters that have the text backwards. When held up to a mirror, they will read the correct way around. I LOVE to use these as a fun way to promote positive affirmations. I leave them in our reading corner, beside a mirror, and smile as I watch the children work their way through the positive affirmation posters.  Positive affirmation posters are a lovely way to spread the power of positivity throughout your classroom. I make sure that the posters are placed in high-traffic areas, such as in our library area, by the sink, the pencil sharpeners etc. I also change them up frequently. I don’t want the message to become a part of the wallpaper, so to speak. I want the children to notice the messages every single day. You may also like the same positive affirmation posters with the beautiful watercolour flowers You can look at those here. No Bullying in Our School Drama Circle and Activity IB PYP

(0)
Drama circles! They bring out the risk taking, creativity in all kids and everyone has so much fun! These printable cards are just one of my drama circle activities that I use to practice the trans- disciplinary skills of cooperation, social and communication to name a few. One card begins the round and each child has to act out the instructions on their card, following on from the previous card. It is great for literacy centres activities as well as cooperative group work. This drama was designed for my 3rd graders as a fun review of the speaking and listening strands. Thus also compatible with the CCSS ELA. There are numbered cards to help keep the younger kids on track and there are cards without numbers which I have used with my 5th graders to add rigour to the activity. The theme is all about bullying and how best to deal with it and prevent it from happening and has a lot of reflection as well as humour included. This a great prerequisite to taking action too. Simply gather the children into a seated circle, shuffle the cards and distribute a card to each child. The start card leads the way and the children have to read their own instructions on their card and then listen and look for actions and words from the acting of each person so that they know when to take their turn. This is developing listening and observational skills as well as communication, presentation and thinking skills. Not every card requires speaking; some ask only for miming. The cards marked with a star are more wordy and better to use with higher level readers. I usually review the card with those kids who struggle with reading prior to the circle. There are 32 cards within this packet and an instruction card. The drama cards can be used with 3rd-6th grade and used within a whole class scenario or smaller groups, where the children are given several cards to read and act from. The concept of drama circles is a great ice breaker or a fun review of the IB skills and attitudes. An IB PYP Growth Mindset Activity A Scavenger Hunt with Attitude

Looking for a fun and engaging activity that reinforces attitudes for growth mindset and positive self image? This is a simple print and go activity that incorporates the 12 IB PYP Attitudes with a fun and inquiry based checklist of self reflection and research. Use for homework, centres or a class focus on any of the attitudes. Ideal for any time of the year, especially back to school, as a getting to know each other activity. Ideally suited for 3rd – 5th grades. UK & USA spelling. You will find a scavenger hunt checklist for each of the attitudes below, together with an engaging doodle note catcher for recording the information and reflections creatively and uniquely. With hands on tasks to complete, such as sharing with someone whom you admire or reciting your alphabet backwards, this can be done both independently or with a partner. It is a very positive activity that shows the kids exactly how they demonstrate these attitudes in their lives and is fun too! Win-win! Each checklist has 5-10 tasks to be completed, focusing wholly on that particular attitude and asking the children to look within themselves as well as the world around them, identifying what that attitude looks like and how it helps us. It can be differentiated by having the children independently select a given number of tasks from the list or complete all of them. Attitudes included: Independence Cooperation Empathy Integrity Appreciation Confidence Creativity Tolerance Commitment Enthusiasm Respect Curiosity You can find many more tips and tools for inquiry based learning in my store and on my blog.
