Resources for Sociology GCSE/A level and Australian Curriculum, Health & Social Care GCSE/A level, Politics A level and PSHCEE for older secondary students.
A set of lessons covering basic areas of PSHCEE that would be relevant to student’s lives moving from the end of high school/start of sixth form to university or the world of work.
A lesson looking at a variety of media representations of refugees, asylum seekers and simply those migrating to a different country. This lesson consists of web link activities, image/source analysis and considering key terms involved such as push/pull factors and the different between emigrant/immigrant.
A powerpoint and video clips describing the difference between sex and gender and discussing the concepts of manipulation and canalisation. The lesson looks at the way that different agents of socialisation teach us what it means to be masculine or feminine in our society.
A lesson and accompanying video resources discussing different ideas about what makes ‘a man’ or ‘a woman’ in today’s society. Students learn where stereotypes may have originated and discuss their ideas about how and why things are changing.
This is not a lesson- this presentation is the key information/knowledge on this topic that could be used as Flipped learning/direct instruction before a lesson/inserted into a lesson presentation or to create a screencast video that students can return to for revision.
A lesson breaking down some of the key terms involved in this topic and then looking at the way Islam and Muslims are portrayed by the media compared to other religions. The lesson then looks into different examples of Muslims working towards the common good and how a variety of different organisations in Australia help to create interfaith understanding and a cohesive society.
A unit of work covering key Sociological concepts and issues as well as an introduction to the concept of Ethnicity, including pre-test, lessons, 3 end of unit assessments with rubrics and “lecture style” content only PowerPoints for you to use as Flipped learning/create screen cast videos from. This unit focuses on the concept of Ethnicity in general but also the experience of Ethnicity in Australia through migration and how that connects to ideas of multiculturalism etc. This unit has links to the Year 10 Civics and Citizenship aspect of the Victorian Curriculum (Australia).
I used the Napier press textbook by Webb et al to create round of questions on each topic. I award points per question and then a prize for winning team of each round. Bonus questions are separate and whichever team gets closest to the bonus question wins a separate prize. Picture round is open to interpretation and you can award points for the most relevant concept students attach to each picture!
All lessons for the Socialism section of the A2 syllabus. I used the key textbook "Political Ideologies- An introduction- 5th edition" by Andrew Heywood to create brief summaries on several slides as well as activities and ideas to engage students.
This is a quiz I devised using You Tube clips of songs that I have linked to some of the key concepts I have studied during the Autumn term within SCLY1. I use this as my last lesson before Christmas holidays as it’s fun but still a revision style quiz for them.
I give students the blank sheet with just the concepts on and then I would play the songs from the links on the teacher sheet (audio only), so freeze your board! Obviously don’t play them in the order they are currently in as this makes it too easy! You don’t have to play the whole song, just see how the class are going.
The answers below aren’t hard and fast, students can argue that different songs go with other concepts so just use your professional judgement when going through the answers at the end!
(My students enjoyed the variety of different songs below and I played some of the 80s videos at the end of the quiz as a fun end to the lesson too!)
