My Teacher is an Alien Reading - Literature Unit - Comprehension Guide

My Teacher is an Alien is a book by Bruce Coville. This book is at a 5.3 reading level, based off the Accelerated Reader scale. This product took me weeks to finish. Included in this document are 36 pages: 4 pages for each of the six sections plus more! There are pre-reading and post reading activities as well. Each section includes: 2 pages of comprehension questions, 1 page of vocabulary work (presented in several different ways), and 1 page with cocurricular objective (language elements, writing, etc) or cross-curricular objective (math, art, social studies, music, etc). Also included: 4-page teacher's key! Each comprehension question includes the page number where the answer can be found based on the 2005 Scholastic Edition. At the end of this unit, I had my small group create an electronic timeline using and online program called biteslide.com. It is similar to PowerPoint, but has an easier process for finding and placing pictures. This group easily retold the ENTIRE story through their presentation. Enjoy! Have a wonderful week! The Witches Reading - Comprehension Guide - Literature Unit

The Witches is a book by Roald Dahl. This book is at a 4.7 reading level, based off the Accelerated Reader scale. Teacher duration I listed as 2 weeks, but it really depends on your students and how in-depth you have them study the book. I am using this in a 5th grade classroom, but would easily work for 4th and perhaps 6th grade. This product will save you HOURS if not DAYS of time. Included in this document are 62 pages. I have divided the book into 11 sections. There are 8-10 comprehension questions and a vocabulary page for each section. In addition, excluding the 1st and 11th section, each section has a co-curricular or cross-curricular activity (including math, writing, poetry, language, art, technology). There are 2 pre-reading activities and 4 post-reading activities as well. Also included: 10-page teacher's key! Each comprehension question includes the page number where the answer can be found (based off the Scholastic 2007 edition, blue cover). My students, while finding some parts of the book disturbing, are really enjoying this. I am excited to share this with you and hope you will notify me if you find any mistakes so that I may fix them. I appreciate your input! Have a wonderful week! Susanna Yust 5th Grade Please be aware of what is appropriate for your students. Post-reading Activity #3 is over the Salem Witch Trials. I teach 5th grade and this ties in with our social studies unit, but do some research before you assign this activity. You may also want to screen the websites and give them one specific one where they can find the information.

his is a set of questions I created for a 5th grade reading group. This book has an Accelerated Reading level of 4.6 and is worth 1.0 points. I tried to create a more computer and graphic savvy look using Pages on an Apple Macbook. Each chapter has 5 questions, including higher-level thinking questions and activating student's knowledge using context clues and drawing pictures (in some of the chapters). The easiest way I found to use this with my students was to print out the entire packet. However, please be aware if you have a high ELL population, you may benefit from doing the vocabulary pages prior to reading the chapters and completing the comprehension questions. In total, this unit took me 13 hours to compile!! I hope that you enjoy it! This book is an excellent introduction to the horrors of World War II without being too overbearing for 4th and 5th grade. It could also be used for a 6th grade student who is struggling. This unit will likely take you 2 weeks, 3 at the most, depending on how in depth you want to take the book. It is an easy read. Have a great year! Susanna Yust

Brian's Return is a book by Gary Paulsen. This book is at a 5.5 reading level, based off the Accelerated Reader scale. This product took me weeks to finish. Included in this document are 54 pages: 3 pages for each chapter. Now, the chapters themselves are fairly short, so I would suggest you choose one or two pages to use per chapter. Each chapter includes: 1 page of comprehension questions, 1 page of vocabulary work (presented in several different ways), and 1 page with a puzzle, cocurricular objective (language elements, writing, etc) or cross-curricular objective (math, art, social studies, music, etc). Also included: 22-page teacher's key! Each comprehension question includes the page number where the answer can be found. My students thoroughly enjoyed this book. I am excited to share this with you and hope you will notify me if you find any mistakes so that I may fix them. I appreciate your input! Have a wonderful week! ~ Wife Teacher Mom

My Life as a Book is by Janet Tashjian with cartoons by Jake Tashjian. This book is at a 5.3 reading level, based off the Accelerated Reader scale. This product took three weeks to complete. Included in this document are 42 pages. Pages 1 & 2 are the title page and the Table of Contents. Each section includes: 2 pages of comprehension questions, 2 pages of vocabulary work (presented in several different ways), and 1 page that is cross or co-curricular. Total content pages: 28. Teacher's key: 8 pages. Of ALL the books we have read this year, this has been my students' favorite! Looking at the cover, you may think there isn't much content in this book. However, there is LOTS of content... it is up to you, the teacher, to pull the content and life lessons to be learned that are hidden throughout the book. Derek is a boy that is relatable to any student in the 4th, 5th, or even 6th grade. I am excited to share this with you and hope you will notify me if you find any mistakes so that I may fix them. I appreciate your input! Have a wonderful week! Susanna Yust
