Aims: This scheme of work in comprised of 12 lessons which intend to promote both a love of reading and a foundation of skills required to be a successful reader: 1. Setting a purpose for reading 2. Determining the meaning of words and phrases 3. Understanding the main idea 4. Skimming and scanning 5. Identifying the writer's purpose and point of view 6. Make links between ideas in a text 7. Critical reasoning 8. Inference and deduction 9. Visualisation 10. Summarising information 11. Cause and effect 12. Types of language Lessons all follow the same structure: • Learning objective/ outcome • Starter activity • Five minutes to change books etc • 20 minutes silent independent reading • Teacher questioning/review • Task linked to LO (20 mins) • Plenary Use of literacy centre managers: • General support and admin during the lesson • Withdrawal of identified students for 1:1 reading Each lesson has a student help sheet. Each student has their own resource booklet.

Created to use with my KS3 and year 10 middle ability English classes at the end of the summer term. Ten rounds with sound clips, picture rounds, sports, anagrams, etc. 200 slides in total. Created to be an end of term hour of fun- some challenge but it's not intended to stretch most able. (Thought I should mention that after my Christmas quiz was reviewed and I was told it was not challenging enough- LOL!)
