Can music teach us about black history? - Primary KS1/KS2 Black History Resource

(1)
Following Dave’s Mercury Prize success, Stormzy’s recent number ones and Drake’s hand in the revival of critically-acclaimed drama Top Boy (which also has a star-studded soundtrack), we thought it fitting to mark the occasion by talking about music. The question students will be discussing is “Can music teach us about black history?” These lessons take pupils on a journey through the history of music and shows how many musicians were influenced by the fight for equality. KS1 pupils then learn about history through musical instruments, whereas KS2 pupils learn that music can hinder change, and discuss other ways that they can learn more about black history. Additionally, the assembly introduces the inspirational figures who made an appearance in the music video to Dave’s sensational song: Black. Please check your school’s safeguarding policy before teaching and consider checking through the materials beforehand. It is very important this week that you stick to the given timing on the videos (e.g. 1:32-2:30), due to inappropriate content outside these times. Our usual video sharing platform SafeShareTV will not allow conversion of some videos due to the nature of their content, and our alternative video viewing platform Viewpure doesn’t always cut off the videos when it should. We have created a template letter to parents/carers (click here to download) should you want to inform them of the discussion on county lines. If you have more time, we advise that you use 45-minute lesson to allow students time to explore this serious issue.
