Following Dave’s Mercury Prize success, Stormzy’s recent number ones and Drake’s hand in the revival of critically-acclaimed drama Top Boy (which also has a star-studded soundtrack), we thought it fitting to mark the occasion by talking about music. The question students will be discussing is “Can music teach us about black history?” These lessons take pupils on a journey through the history of music and shows how many musicians were influenced by the fight for equality. KS1 pupils then learn about history through musical instruments, whereas KS2 pupils learn that music can hinder change, and discuss other ways that they can learn more about black history.
