Following Dave’s Mercury Prize success, Stormzy’s recent number ones and Drake’s hand in the revival of critically-acclaimed drama Top Boy (which also has a star-studded soundtrack), we thought it fitting to mark the occasion by talking about music. The question students will be discussing is “Can chart music teach us about black history?” These lessons ask students to consider the role of chart music in conveying the experiences of black British performers, and whether understanding these can in turn help us understand black history. The 15 minute lesson impact of lyrics from some of the UK’s most influential performers while the 45 minute also looks at how musicians can influence change.
