## Addition and subtraction within 40 or 50

• Year group: Year 2
• Term: Autumn
• Duration: 1 weeks
• Keystage: KS1
• Age Range: 5 to 6 yrs
• Unit can be taught out of sequence: N
• Week Range: 4

In this chapter, pupils further secure their understanding of addition and subtraction by working with numbers within 40 or 50.

Pupils continue to read, write and interpret mathematical statements involving addition (+), subtraction (-) and the equals sign (=). They represent and use number bonds and related subtraction facts, while building on their previous knowledge of adding and subtracting one and two-digit numbers (including 0), within 40 or 50.

At this stage, pupils do not use formal methods without concrete or pictorial representation. They continue to use representations to explore the concepts of addition and subtraction, to see the connection between the two and to write down the related calculations. They also use them to solve simple one-step and missing number problems.

### White Rose Maths

#### Reasoning - Problem Solving - Number (KS1) and weight problems (KS2) - March 24th

There are two problems for KS1 and two for KS2.

In KS1 children have to work out the missing values on a number line and then find the difference. They then have to work out the values of each shape in a square grid.

At KS2 children have two problems they have to solve involving weight of objects.

Every day in March the White Rose Maths Hub is aiming to put out a question of the day. Not long to go to get your solutions in.

Tweet us @WRMathsHub a picture of your children's answers for a chance to win a prize.

#### Reasoning - Problem Solving - Number Probelms - March 11th

Today's problems are ones that involve number. There are two problems for KS1 and two for KS2.

In KS1 problem children have to use simple multiplication facts to work out the length of a particular rectangle. They then have to find a missing value given a total, perhaps using a bar model.

At KS2 children have two problems they have to solve involve number properties. The first one they have to know what factors make up a particular number and in the second problem they have to find a particular number that satisfies particular criteria.

Every day in March the White Rose Maths Hub is aiming to put out a question of the day.

### Mathematics Mastery

#### Addition and subtraction within 40 or 50

Encouraging pupils to calculate flexibly is a key element of the Mathematics Mastery programme.

This practical teaching guide helps you develop your pupils to apply their number sense when problem-solving and make connections between calculation strategies.

This guide exemplifies a teaching approach for addition and subtraction within 40 or 50

• The CPA approach should be incorporated to support pupils in making connections between calculation strategies
• Teachers can use this guidance to encourage flexible mathematical thinking

Enabling teachers to continuously develop their practice is a key element of the Mathematics Mastery Programme.

This CPD video provides step-by-step guidance on addition and subtraction within 40 or 50.

Our videos aim to:

• Model teaching tips, techniques and clarify how to make connections between concrete, pictorial and abstract representations
• Support the teaching of different methods and concepts, rather than focusing on one method only
• Enhance subject knowledge and support non-specialists
