## Telling the time

• Year group: Year 2
• Term: Summer
• Topic: Time
• Duration: 2 weeks
• Keystage: KS1
• Age Range: 6 to 7 yrs
• Unit can be taught out of sequence: Y
• Week Range: 6 - 7

In this chapter, pupils tell the time to five minutes, compare and sequence intervals of time and know the number of minutes in an hour and number of hours in a day.

Pupils apply the skill of counting in 5s to tell the time to the nearest five minutes and, in addition to the vocabulary learned in the previous chapter, use language such as “quarter past” and “quarter to”. They also know the number of minutes in an hour and the number of hours in a day. In later chapters, this understanding will help them to convert between units of time.

Additionally, pupils compare and sequence intervals of time and extend their existing vocabulary to include “longer”, “shorter”, “longest” or “shortest”.

Quantities of time should be represented in a variety of ways, in order to support pupils in their exploration and clarification of the different elements of this concept.

Pupils looking for challenge should be encouraged to formulate and solve problems involving time differences and sums.

Enabling teachers to continuously develop their practice is a key element of the Mathematics Mastery Programme.

This CPD video provides step-by-step guidance on telling the time.

Our videos aim to:

• Model teaching tips, techniques and clarify how to make connections between concrete, pictorial and abstract representations
• Support the teaching of different methods and concepts, rather than focusing on one method only
• Enhance subject knowledge and support non-specialists

#### Telling the time

Mathematical discussion is a key element of the Mathematics Mastery programme.

Talk Tasks are a brilliant way of enabling pupils to develop their mathematical language, thinking, understanding and confidence.

This activity explores the concept of telling the time

• Talk tasks are best completed in mixed attainment pairs, with pupils taking turns to listen and construct arguments
• Emphasis is on discussion rather than the solution, encouraging pupils to use key language and talk in full sentences
• Ask pupils to prove their answers in a variety of ways, using the CPA approach to support mathematical understanding and number sense

#### Reading analogue clocks / solve time word problems

Visit www.adamup.co.uk for lots of award winning kooky maths videos/songs.These are differentiated resources/worksheets. Most are progressive so you can start the lower ability groups at the beginning and the higher ability in the middle. #### Theme Park, Maths Enterprise

This is a group of resources I made (I used some ideas from other places, but I made the things myself) in order to use as many Maths related exercises with the final aim of creating their own theme park. Some of the skills covered are:
Shapes, co-ordinates, symmetry, speed, line graphs, pictograms, bar graphs, perimeter, area, percentages, tally, problem solving, survey, money, budget and time.

Enjoy!!

#### Telling the time 5 mins

A set of three worksheets i have devised about telling the time to 5 minute intervals. Aimed at Y3 originally. First sheet (HA) is 9 clock faces where the children have to write the time in digital and wirte ...minutes past..... and 3 clock faces at the bottom to draw on the given time. The second sheet shows a clockface where the children need to count in 5s around the clock and then tell the time in digital to the 5 mins. The last sheet (LA) is telling the time the hour, half and quarter. Hope they are of help to someone! :)

#### Matching analogue and digital clocks

A set of 3 differentitated sheets where children need to match the analogue clocks to the correct digital clocks.

#### Time

Worksheets ranging in difficulty to show times including o'clock, half past, quarter to, quarter past and telling the time to the nearest 5 minutes

#### Maths Murder Mystery 13 - Made to Measure

A maths murder mystery with 6 suspects. Each of the 5 clues eliminates one suspect. All the clues are based on measurement covering: time, speed, weight, area, perimeter, capacity, measuring length and scale.

#### Pizza Cooking Times - digital (am & pm)

PLEASE LEAVE FEEDBACK! WS differentiated 4 ways. One step and two step word problems Children have to use the available information to work out what time pizzas will be ready for pick up and delivery. Digital times *Handy hint - change the customers names to teachers in your school - they love it!

#### Timetables KS2

Activities reading train and opening timetables with questions - used as revision with year 6 to fit in with topic of London (linked to journey planning).

#### Analogue Time Domino Activity

Two activities I made for Y2 children. The analogue to analogue dominoes for the lower ability children to include o'clock, half past and quarter past times. The 2nd activity for my more able children making matching analogue to digital times. The children write a digital time to match the hands they have drawn on the clock. This one to include quarter to times. Once completed the children can cut out the dominoes and play with their own game
