In this chapter, pupils compare and classify geometric shapes, including quadrilaterals and triangles.

Pupils compare and classify geometric shapes, including quadrilaterals and triangles, based on their properties and sizes in a variety of contexts. They continue to classify shapes using geometrical properties, extending this to the identification of different triangles (eg, isosceles, equilateral, scalene) and quadrilaterals (eg, parallelogram, rhombus, trapezium).

### White Rose Maths

#### Classifying shapes

Direct link to our Y4 scheme.

This worksheet asks children to name shapes then draw them and decide why some shapes are more difficult to draw than others.

### Mathematics Mastery

Mathematical discussion is a key element of the Mathematics Mastery programme.

Talk Tasks are a brilliant way of enabling pupils to develop their mathematical language, thinking, understanding and confidence.

This activity explores the concept of classifying quadrilaterals and triangles.

• Talk tasks are best completed in mixed attainment pairs, with pupils taking turns to listen and construct arguments
• Emphasis is on discussion rather than the solution, encouraging pupils to use key language and talk in full sentences
• Ask pupils to prove their answers in a variety of ways, using the CPA approach to support mathematical understanding and number sense

Enabling pupils to develop their mathematical reasoning skills through independent work is a key element of the Mathematics Mastery programme.

This activity explores the concept of classifying quadrilaterals and triangles

• Pupils should complete these tasks using concrete manipulatives as part of the CPA approach
• Pupils should be encouraged to explain their working in full sentences
• These tasks may be adapted with pupils working in pairs to encourage mathematical discussion

#### Year 4 – Geometry: Position and direction – Summer week 11 – Block 6 - Introducing translation

This pack of resources covers Year 4 Geometry: position and direction week 11 of the summer term. The resources support a mastery approach to teaching mathematics. CPA (Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract) is promoted throughout therefore ensuring you have appropriate concrete resources in your classroom is recommended to make full use of the packs.

Week 4 includes worksheets and activities on:

• Describing a position
• Describing a position with coordinates
• Drawing on a grid
• Moving on a grid
• Describing a movement on a grid

I hope you find the resources useful. Feedback is very welcome.

Students use this resource to discover the geometrical properties of quadrilaterals about sides and angles by using what they know about symmetries. PowerPoint has initial instructions and shapes to cut out - the sheet develops the start further. Then return to the PowerPoint for the final activity involving further classification. This could also be used with 'Would I lie to you? - Quadrilaterals' which is also in my resources.

Explore different Quadrilaterals with geoboards and record on dotted grids. Sort quadrilaterals according to properties (parallel and perpendicular lines). Classify, describe and name quadrilaterals using the grid.

#### Properties of Shapes (Quadrilaterals and Triangles)

1 x card sort on names of quadrilaterals and triangles which can be extended to include the properties of these shapes.

1 x fill in the blanks worksheet using the same information as the card sort (I used this as homework)

1 x What Am I? cards
