## Solving problems involving money

• Year group: Year 4
• Term: Summer
• Topic: Money
• Duration: 2 weeks
• Keystage: KS2
• Age Range: 8 to 9 yrs
• Unit can be taught out of sequence: N
• Week Range: 3 - 4

In this chapter, pupils continue to solve problems involving money.

Linked to their everyday experiences of money, pupils are introduced to the use of the decimal point in separating pounds and pence. They connect this with their understanding of place value, as well as that of fractions. They understand, for example, that 10p is one tenth of a pound and 1p is one hundredth of a pound.

Pupils go on to use the formal notation to solve problems. They estimate and compare amounts, as well as solve problems involving all four rules. Pupils apply their knowledge to tackle money-related problems in other topic areas. For example, pupils may find a fraction of an amount of money.

#### KS2 Reasoning and Problem Solving Questions - 25th April 2016

Following our March twitter problems we have been inundated with requests for a few more new ones in the run up to SATS. We are not sure how often we will put them up, but here are five problems you can use with your Y6 group.

We hope you like them. Feel free to tweet us your solutions to @WRMathsHub

### Mathematics Mastery

#### Calculating with money

Mathematical discussion is a key element of the Mathematics Mastery programme.

Talk Tasks are a brilliant way of enabling pupils to develop their mathematical language, thinking, understanding and confidence.

This activity explores the concept of calculating with money.

• Talk tasks are best completed in mixed attainment pairs, with pupils taking turns to listen and construct arguments
• Emphasis is on discussion rather than the solution, encouraging pupils to use key language and talk in full sentences
• Ask pupils to prove their answers in a variety of ways, using the CPA approach to support mathematical understanding and number sense

Like what you see? Mathematics Mastery is a professional development programme for teachers with a mission to transform mathematics education in the UK.

This task is just a taster of the complete classroom resources we offer. We also provide in-depth development training, online CPD, specialist support and assessment tools.

We believe all elements of our programme are vital in creating lasting change – enabling every child to enjoy and succeed in mathematics.

#### Calculating with money

Enabling pupils to develop their mathematical reasoning skills through independent work is a key element of the Mathematics Mastery programme.

This activity explores the concept of calculating with money

• Pupils should complete these tasks using concrete manipulatives as part of the CPA approach
• Pupils should be encouraged to explain their working in full sentences
• These tasks may be adapted with pupils working in pairs to encourage mathematical discussion

#### Shape & Space patio investigation

A lesson resource pack based on a real life problem about building a patio. (Actually based on my own patio!). To be delivered over 1 or several lessons. Differentiated activitiy sheets to suit Year 4 - 6. Topics also included: using and applying numbers; multi-step problems.

#### Theme Park, Maths Enterprise

This is a group of resources I made (I used some ideas from other places, but I made the things myself) in order to use as many Maths related exercises with the final aim of creating their own theme park. Some of the skills covered are:
Shapes, co-ordinates, symmetry, speed, line graphs, pictograms, bar graphs, perimeter, area, percentages, tally, problem solving, survey, money, budget and time.
