## Addition and subtraction of numbers with more than 4 digits

In this chapter, pupils extend their understanding of addition and subtraction to include larger integers.

Building on learning from previous chapters, pupils add and subtract whole numbers with more than four digits, including using formal written methods such as columnar addition and subtraction. They also mentally add and subtract increasingly large numbers.

Pupils use rounding to check answers to calculations and determine, in the context of a problem, levels of accuracy.

They also solve increasingly complex problems with more than one step. Many of the problems are set in authentic, real-life contexts and require pupils to use representations (eg, bar modelling) to decide which operations and methods to use. They should be able to explain why they chose a particular method.

A pack of additional resources to compliment the addition and subtraction packs that are already uploaded.

The pack contains a variety of activities and games to consolidate learning in a fun and engaging way.

#### Design a Zoo - Maths problem solving using addition and subtraction, area and perimeter

The task is to design a brand new zoo thinking about
different animals needing different amounts of space, the children have to calculate costs and profit. They are not given a budget but the more species they have the more money they earn.

I have included a fact sheet: containing 7 pages that include the species of animals the space they need and some tables to record their calculations, an editable Smart Notebook resource to start the project and a squared paper sheet (best printed on A3) to try and calculate the perimeter - if they share the perimeters it reduces the cost of the fencing.

This took my class 4 maths lessons with a 5th sharing their designs and budget. They loved it - probably because we approached it as a design competition.
