Factors, multiples and prime numbers

In this chapter, pupils learn about factors, multiples and prime numbers, as well as square and cube numbers.

In preparation for work with primes, pupils find all factor pairs of a number and identify the common factors of two numbers.

Following an introduction, pupils know that a number is considered a prime if it has no factor except 1 and itself. Using their knowledge of factors, they establish whether this is the case for any number up to 100. They also recall prime numbers up to 19 through frequent practice and application.

Later, pupils recognise and use square and cube numbers. They should experience concrete and pictorial representations of both number types in order to understand why they are described this way. Pupils are introduced to the notation for squared ² and cubed ³ and solve problems involving square and cube numbers.

Reasoning - Problem Solving - Money Problems (KS1/2) - March 8th

Today's problems are ones that involve reasoning and problem solving with the numbers. There are two problems for KS1 and two for KS2.

In KS1 problem children have to use a number line to work out the size of the interval and then locate a particular number. Children then have to work out the highest and lowest numbers you can make given three digit cards. Version 2 of the Y2 problems has a slightly less demanding problem Q1 that might be good as a warm up.

At KS2 children also need to find intervals on a number line, but the problem is a little more involved.. The second problem should be tacked systematically.

Multiples (LCM) and Factors (HCF)

This is a step by step guide, first through multiples and factors before going onto comparing two or more numbers. I use 'factor bugs' as I found that this suits students who particularly forget what a 'factor' is, as it is a way of working out factors of a number visually. You will have to draw the factor bugs legs. There are notes in the footnote of the slide. There are activities for the students to complete.
