Teach for America, the nonprofit group that places college graduates into underperforming schools, has announced it will be cutting its cenrtal office staff by 15 per cent.

The organization failed to hit its recruitment targets in both 2014 and 2015 and is now looking to trim its headcount.

TFA also revealed that it was scrapping its diversity office as part of the changes, meaning the group will no longer have a central body to ensure its recruits reflect the diversity of the students they teach.

News of the troubles at TFA broke on Diane Ravitch’s blog, which posted an article from an anonymous “high-level employee” at the organization, which claimed it was not “the rank and file” facing the ax.

In a statement released yesterday, TFA confirmed there would be job losses as it overhauled the structure of the group, which could create a “leaner, more agile central structure”.

“Extraordinarily talented and dedicated people work at Teach For America,” the release states. “Attrition and individual moves into other open roles at TFA should appreciably reduce the number of people who lose their jobs.

“We project our total national staff size will become about 15 percent smaller. For individuals who do not find their next role with us, we are providing a generous support package, as well as supporting our people in finding roles in our partner organizations.”
