Sentence Types

Sentence Types

A powerpoint created for use with my year 5 literacy set. It outlines the three types of sentences and explains how to use a subordinate clause in the middle of a main clause. It also include examples at the end for the children to identify the clauses. A set of sentences for children to add in subordinate clauses. I printed them to A3 and got the children to cut them up and add in a subordinate clause on a coloured piece of paper.

How to use commas in sentences. Detailed lesson plan and interactive smart notebook programme

WALT : use commas in sentences. (written this way to encompass usage both in lists for LA & MA, and in marking out extra info for HA.)WILF: commas that sit on the line and that are in the correct place in the sentence.Great for a teacher who needs a detailed lesson plan and a ready to use smart notebook programme. Original stimulus and lots of funny examples which my class loved. Oh how we had some fun with commas. I did it in the lead up to a play so they had to write lists of things they'd need for the play. Your students could use the same stimulus (on end page to print out) or make up their own lists.

Holes by Louis Sachar - Unit of Work

Holes by Louis Sachar - Unit of Work

This resource contains a range of vocabulary and quality discussion questions for each section of the novel. It also includes a choice of follow-up tasks children could complete as they read the book. It is designed to last 7 weeks, however it can be adapted to suit your learners.I have used it in my classroom following the Highland Literacy Project's way of organising reading in the upper primary classroom. Children engage in reading 3 times per week:Session 1 - Pupils discuss the text, read the set pages independently and look up new vocabulary from the pages they have read.Session 2 - Pupils discuss the pages read with their group and the teacher.Session 3 - Pupils complete a follow-up task based on their book to demonstrate further understanding. When I have used this, I have printed a few pages of the document to share between pupils in the reading group. For Week 1, Session 1 - pupils use page 1 of the document. For Week 1, Session 2 - pupils use page 2 of the document. For Week 1, Session 3 - pupils have completed follow-up tasks in their jotters. This download includes both PDF and Word document formats, so it can be easily edited. I hope you find this resource useful, however you choose to use it!

Persuasive writing - Key Stage 2 Context - Plastic pollution in our oceans

Persuasive writing - Key Stage 2 Context - Plastic pollution in our oceans

A great cross curricular writing topic that gives real purpose for the children's writing. A series of 11 literacy lessons encourages the children to deconstruct exemplar and comparative texts/ speeches about plastic pollution in our oceans. By the end of the unit the children will write a persuasive speech to raise awareness of this important issue and encourage people to do something to help. With my class (Y3 - though can be easily adapted for older children) we turned the speeches into a video using 'Adobe Spark Video' then tweeted them out and put them on our class website to widen the audience of their work. My children absolutely loved this unit of work and the resulting speeches were fantastic! All resources and links are given to just download and deliver these lessons. I used Promethean flipcharts to present to the class but these can be easily transferred to a smart board resource or Powerpoint.
