Library Challenge Cards

Library Challenge Cards

These ‘Library Challenge’ cards were made for my class library, but they could be used in a school library as well. The idea was just to get the children excited about reading and properly engaged with the books, and they’ve really enjoyed working through the activities – an added bonus being that I use this work to decorate the walls of our library. There’s a selection of 10 Library Challenge Cards, plus a ‘Library Challenge of the Week’ which just allows for changing things up a little without having to print and laminate more cards.

A bumper set of resources initially used in the year 4 topic of: Creating Images with Poetry, Similes and Metaphors. Due to the popularity of this resource I have included a Powerpoint I used for a very successful observation lesson by Ofsted involving describing a beach setting with similes and metaphors. I recently adapted this in this for a year 6 class I took. There is also quite a few poems I have written using Similes and Metaphors in them to create images and a few more resources too including a soothing soundtrack and background to play on your IW on loop.I have continually updated this resource due to its popularity and quality. Please check my other resources out here...https://www.tes.com/teaching-resources/shop/dave_orritt

Persuasive writing - Key Stage 2 Context - Plastic pollution in our oceans

Persuasive writing - Key Stage 2 Context - Plastic pollution in our oceans

A great cross curricular writing topic that gives real purpose for the children's writing. A series of 11 literacy lessons encourages the children to deconstruct exemplar and comparative texts/ speeches about plastic pollution in our oceans. By the end of the unit the children will write a persuasive speech to raise awareness of this important issue and encourage people to do something to help. With my class (Y3 - though can be easily adapted for older children) we turned the speeches into a video using 'Adobe Spark Video' then tweeted them out and put them on our class website to widen the audience of their work. My children absolutely loved this unit of work and the resulting speeches were fantastic! All resources and links are given to just download and deliver these lessons. I used Promethean flipcharts to present to the class but these can be easily transferred to a smart board resource or Powerpoint.

Emoji Story Starter Cards for Creative Writing

Emoji Story Starter Cards for Creative Writing

A fun way to engage students in creative writing and story telling. This tool can be used for both Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3. It is also very accessible for SEN students in lower KS4. Using these cards, students are given a story task. They need to use all six of their emoji's within their story, and can even cut out their stickers to use within their writing. A really fun exercise for students and something that stops the 'writers block' that young people often suffer.

38 English grammar dice games, fun to play, all fully resourced - just add dice!

38 English grammar dice games, fun to play, all fully resourced - just add dice!

This is a whopping 130 page word document containing all 38 of my grammar games. Unlike a lot of sellers, my work is NOT a PDF, so you can edit and adapt to make it work in your classroom. This resource represents a many, many evenings and weekends (I know - get a life!). All of these games have been tested in class, and adjusted if needed - they have a real impact on learning. For each grammar skill there is:a child friendly explanation of the grammar concept; printable rules and resources for a lively dice game; suggestions to challenge or support learners; suggestions for application of the skill in written work. For some grammar games there is also a lesson plan and a presentation. Here are some of the skills covered: determiners/plurals/commands, questions and statements/ simple and compound sentences/ adverbs/ proper nouns/ classifying nouns/ contractions/ pronouns/ prepositions/prepositional phrases/ apostrophes/ adjectives/ sentence variety/ parentheses/semi-colons/ discussion/ persuasion/ complex sentences / causal connectives/ fronted adverbials/ speech/ relative clauses/ modal verbs/spelling/language of persuasion/argument/discussion

Rainforest Poetry

Rainforest Poetry

'Who lives here?' PowerPoint introduces a 'conversation' poem about the creatures and habitat of the rainforest. It provides a structured step by step lesson to support composition. It also allows reinforcement of parts of speech particularly verbs and prepositions. Extended poetry task also provided for variety and possible differentiation. Several verse examples are provided for clarity. Rainforest booklet is provided for children to write their final draft for display or poetry portfolio.'Rainforest List Poem' PowerPoint continues with a poetic theme and uses a simple format to motivate composition. This clear, concise and colourful presentation leads the learners step by step through the composition of a list poem based on a 'rainforest' theme. There is a grammar element throughout with an emphasis on nouns, adjectives and 'ing' verbs. I have found a poetry context an effective way to embed incidental grammar teaching. Although the outcome is a simple list poem, it can easily be differentiated for older learners. This would involve extending each line using e.g. adverbs or an additional clause. Children are encouraged to compose an opening line, closing line and' list' lines inbetween.

Adaptable powerpoint presentation on dialogue (Greek mythology theme)

Adaptable powerpoint presentation on dialogue (Greek mythology theme)

This is a basic power point I made to teach children about dialogue. It is based on a Greek mythology theme. the children will be reading the summarized version of 'King Midas and the golden touch'. You can then give a picture of a scene in the story and a paper to write on and ask them to write a dialogue for each character, keeping in mind the storyline. Children should be encouraged to use different dialogue tags, speech marks, commas and adjectives in their written dialogue. They should then act out their scene using their written dialogue and some props. This power point also includes learning intention, a success criteria, features of a dialogue, a slide on how to write a dialogue, a summary of the story, task instructions and a very short quiz. *Please keep in mind, this is for a 30 minute lesson*
