We're an Academy with a big heart. Staff work closely as a team and pride themselves on never giving up on a pupil. This is, however, a challenging environment where resilience and a deep commitment to supporting young people with Special Educational Needs are paramount.

Wishmore Cross Academy, part of the Academies Enterprise Trust (AET), is a residential special school in Chobham, Surrey, for boys aged 9 to 16 years who have social, emotional and mental health difficulties. We can admit up to 70 boys and can offer up to 14 residential places (including extended days) on a flexible basis for up to 4 nights per week.

Working with us:

  • You will work with our young people and help them achieve the best possible outcomes across our Vocational Curriculum.  You will have passion and flexibility in order to deliver, with a creative, inspirational approach to delivering the curriculum.
  • We warmly welcome applications from both qualified and unqualified teachers.  As we have experience of supporting staff through their NQT year, we would also be happy to consider applications from NQTs.  Teach First and AET (the multi-academy trust that we are part of) are delighted to be partnering for the expansion of the Early Carer Framework programme for September 2020.  This is a remarkable opportunity, working together with a high quality delivery partner in Teach First.  For any NQTs joining us in September, this will help you thrive and support you in the early stages of your career with AET.
  • The successful candidate will have a good degree and some knowledge of specific learning difficulties and a variety of behaviour management strategies to support children would be an advantage.
  • You will undertake 1:1 tuition for ALP pupils in core subjects as well as offer a vocational option into the main school (seeking painting and decorating, construction, animal care or horticulture as priority areas of expertise).

What we can offer:

  • Subsidized staff housing for an exceptional candidate!
  • An extremely friendly, supportive and caring team who all work together
  • An approachable and welcoming Senior Leadership team who are actively involved in the day to day running of the school
  • Free school lunches
  • Free on-site parking
  • Excellent CPD courses including Safeguarding, MAPA and Health and Safety
  • The opportunity to develop your education career; Wishmore Cross has a track record of developing, progressing and training up staff via the School Direct programme.
  • Wellbeing - we provide experiences, social learning and formal programmes that enable staff to develop new skills, and to work, collaborate, learn and develop with colleagues across our large AET network. There is also regular support and supervision for staff to ensure they remain at the peak of their emotional well-being.

We warmly welcome candidates to come and see what makes Wishmore Cross so special.  Please contact the school on 01276 857555 to arrange a time to pop in (following social distancing guidelines).

Wishmore Cross is a Special Academy for up to 82 boys (with 80 currently on roll) aged 7 to 16 who have social, emotional and mental health difficulties. We provide a highly effective and individual package of education, care and pastoral support to young people who may have had only negative experiences of school. A safe, caring environment supported by high levels of staffing ensures that each pupil has the opportunity to achieve their full potential.

Based in Chobham, located close to both the M3 and M25 Motorways in the north-west corner of Surrey, the Academy draws pupils from a range of backgrounds, both urban and rural, across Surrey and also neighbouring LEAs.

We're an Academy with a big heart. Staff work closely as a team and pride themselves on never giving up on a pupil. This is, however, a challenging environment where resilience and a deep commitment to supporting young people with Special Educational Needs are paramount.

OFSTED

The Academy is currently under the leadership of the Executive Headteacher, Gareth Howells and Ricardo Hylton, Head of School, who both bring a wealth of experience of SEMH and leadership with them.  Since the school moved under their leadership, it is thriving despite the challenges that Covid-19 has brought to the education sector.  The OFSTED inspection in late September 2018 judged the Academy as ‘Requires Improvement’ but highlighted many strengths.  The staff team are working hard to secure the phased changes required whilst maintaining our child-centred approach to learning.

We are committed to reducing restrictive physical intervention and this helps to create an ethos where physical aggression is rare. We also make use of restorative justice and this is successfully helping pupils to develop self-control, a sense of empathy and an understanding of right and wrong. As a result, over their time in the Academy, pupils develop more tolerant and inclusive values.
