The Music Department at Salesian

Salesian Music Department is a thriving department with three current members of staff, a larger than average GCSE music group and both Year 12 and Year 13 A Level music. We are incredibly proud of our results and last year achieved 90% A*-C and 66% A*/A at GCSE, and 100% A-B at AS and A Level.

In addition, we also run the Trinity Arts Award scheme and offer music support to many of our feeder primary schools. We have 7 choirs, orchestra, Sinfonia, jazz band, African drumming group and ukulele group and every year put on a carol service, school musical, spring concert, choral and orchestral concert, Battle of the Bands and many other events. Over 200 students are involved in some sort of musical extra-curricular activity/peripatetic lessons.

We are very well resourced with three bespoke classrooms, a keyboard for every student in the class, a class-set of African drums, a samba kit and tuned percussion. We are particularly proud of our rigorous KS3 curriculum which we feel best prepares students for GCSE and A Level. We use the Edexcel exam board for both qualifications.

We support the liturgical life of the school through providing music for masses throughout the year and have our own team of peripatetic music staff under the umbrella of 'Salesian Music Academy'.

In addition to all the above we are passionate about developing new music teachers and currently run the music hub for Teach South East SCITT. We are always excited about meeting and developing new music teachers and sharing what we have to offer here.

Salesian School is characterised by the philosophy of the Salesian founder St John Bosco (1815-1888). He stressed high educational standards and sound moral and religious education. He insisted too on a friendly atmosphere in his schools where the idea of community could be fostered. We strive to ensure that every student experiences personally, a happy atmosphere that will help them to leave the school with a high level of confidence in their own abilities as well as excellent examination results. These goals are delivered through a strong pastoral system, excellent learning and teaching and an extensive range of sporting, cultural, physical and social extra-curricular activities.

It is at the foundation of our values to:

  • Develop the whole person - mind, body and spirit
  • Ensure relationships are key
  • Ensure that all decisions are made in the best interests of the children
  • Ensure that everything we do is based on Gospel values

We promise parents and students that we will:

  • Ensure that students get the best results they are capable of achieving
  • Develop the skills and attributes that students will need to be successful in the world of the future
  • Develop the morals and values of our students to help them lead decent Christian lives and go on to promote these values throughout the world

We who work in Salesian Schools state our belief in our young people. We recognise that they come from differing backgrounds but that they are of equal value to God and to us. In the spirit of St John Bosco, we turn our efforts to those who stand in special need because of lack of material or emotional security.

We set out to create in our schools a joyful atmosphere in which the dignity and worth of each pupil and member of staff is recognised, developed and safeguarded. Our schools are noted for an atmosphere of welcome where all feel at home and a sense of safety and security. Staff are willing to be present with the pupils in friendship and to go that one step further, where this is necessary, to meet the needs of young people.

We strive to affirm, develop and challenge the abilities of each. We are concerned with the way in which each person matures within the context of the community. While recognising that national standards have a part to play, in seeking to achieve these, we emphasise the unique path each person will take. Our main criterion is personal worth. We prepare young people to be a positive influence in the places where they live and work with others.

Within our Salesian Schools we foster the spiritual, moral and religious development of our pupils and a lively celebration of prayer. In this, we respect where each one stands and his or her basic freedom to choose. However, we strive to present these important features of school life in a way that speaks to the needs and concerns of our young people.

We recognise that in our present age there are many social and educational tensions that stretch our staff, at times, to breaking point. In our schools, therefore, we undertake to affirm our commitment to and support for each other.

We also recognise that we are part of a network of schools within the Diocese and Local Area. We appreciate and respect the work of colleagues in these schools.
