Ysgol Bryn Elian is an 11-18 mixed comprehensive school of 810 pupils. The school opened in 1976 to serve the eastern side of Colwyn Bay and the surrounding villages. The catchment area for the school is diverse, including areas of relative wealth as well as areas of real deprivation. The school serves rural and urban communities, and attracts pupils from outside its traditional catchment area . Ysgol Bryn Elian has an excellent reputation for the quality of its pastoral care, academic success and extra curricular programme.

The school has a Head Teacher, two Deputy Head Teachers and three Assistant Head Teachers. There are Learning Managers for each year group, assisted by non-teaching Learning Mentors whose function is to provide direct support for those pupils in most need. The academic structure is through designated departments, led by Heads of Department.

The school has an elective Governing Body, drawn from parents and persons of standing in the local community. There is also a Parent Teacher Association [PTA] which works to generate funds as well as supporting events through providing refreshments. The PTA is also a consultation body for developments in the school and is a registered charity.

Ysgol Bryn Elian has a clearly defined motto, “Achievement for All.” This commitment is expanded and made available in a variety of school publications so that all stakeholders are aware of the school’s values. This is well exemplifed by the outstanding provision for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, whereby the school enables a very large number of students to achieve the Award: over 100 students per year. On its own, the school has produced more than half of the gold Award winners in the county of Conwy.

The school’s excellent workacross all key indicators was recently recognized through the Wales Quality Award, where we were the first secondary school in Wales to be awarded the Prize for Learning. This prestigious achievement measures the school against the European Quality Standards.

The school’s aims are:
• To provide a first class learning experience for all our pupils
• To maintain a well-ordered learning environment
• To maintain and develop a caring ethos
• To provide a full comprehensive education for all our pupils To prepare pupils for adult life
• To serve our community
• To set, achieve and maintain high standards throughout the school
• To broaden pupils’ horizons and ambitions and to nurture a sense of pride and achievement
• To encourage high standards of self-discipline and behaviour
• To develop pupils’ moral, spiritual and aesthetic awareness.

The school regularly performs in the top quartile of similar schools in Wales. Results at Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4 and post-16 are regularly above expectation. As a result, a significant number of Sixth Form students are able to access higher education courses.

The school’s curriculum is inclusive, and reflects the Learning Pathways guidance. At Year 10 and at Year 12, pupils and students have a wide-range of courses, both vocational and traditional to choose form. The school has embraced the Welsh Baccalaureate at all levels, with the Advanced now firmly embedded into the Sixth Form experience and the Intermediate/Foundation forming the base curriculum for all Year 10 pupils.

At Bryn Elian, we pride ourselves on the fact that the school’s motto, “Achievement for All” is an every day reality for staff and pupils. We are an inclusive community, in which everyone is enabled to give of their best and the achievements of pupils and staff alike are celebrated and shared.
