Description | The Aboriginal Education Teacher's role would primarily focus on liaising with the Aboriginal community and promoting Aboriginal perspectives within the school. The teacher will also be involved with the planning and implementation of a literacy and numeracy program targeted at improving educational outcomes for Aboriginal students. The teacher will be responsible to the school principal and liaise closely with the Learning Support team. Duties may be varied according to the needs of the school. | |
Position Requirements | The Aboriginal Education teacher should have the necessary skills and experience to carry out the following duties:
• a relevant understanding of the philosophy of Catholic Education. • liaising with the local Aboriginal community and the school • liaising with parents of Aboriginal children • fostering the regular school attendance of Aboriginal students through providing appropriate support to families • encouraging parental involvement in school activities and other school volunteer programs • attending where appropriate parent teacher interviews involving Aboriginal students • making contact with the Aboriginal community to assist the school in their educational needs • contributing to the cultural knowledge of all students by helping teachers to help incorporate Aboriginal perspectives in their classroom • providing advice about culturally appropriate human and material resources • promoting and organising cultural activities throughout the year, eg NAIDOC Week celebrations • negotiate and implement Individual Education Plans for Aboriginal students. |

Essential Criteria | This is an Aboriginal targeted position. (Being Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander is a genuine occupational qualification for this position as described under section 14 (d) of the NSW Anti-discrimination Act, 1977)
The applicant must
• be appropriately qualified as a 4 year trained teacher • be able to continue to build relationships between the school and parents of Aboriginal students • be able to support and attend aboriginal immersions, ceremonies and professional development events • Be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and contemporary educational issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and have established links with their local Aboriginal community. (Being Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander is a genuine occupational qualification for this position as described under section 14 (d) of the NSW Anti-discrimination Act, 1977) • Your current NESA and Working With Children number must be recorded on your application Note: To start or return to working as a teacher in a NSW school, you must be accredited by NESA. |
