Job overview

Required from September 2021, a talented, hard-working and dynamic teacher to inspire in the girls throughout the School a love of Art and to support the introduction of Graphic Communication at A Level in the Girls’ Division. This is an important role which would suit an ambitious, creative individual wishing to make a significant impact on the success of the School and to enhance the girls’ education, through both curricular and extracurricular activities.

The successful candidate will be an experienced, suitably qualified and committed teacher of Art, able to meet the rewarding challenge of enthusing our gifted and highly motivated girls from Year 7 to Sixth Form, both inside and outside the classroom. S/he will be a first-rate classroom practitioner who is able to model and develop excellence for the girls. Whilst Fine Art is currently the core of what we do, we are looking to expand our offering. In particular, we are seeking to move the teaching of Graphic Communication from the Boys’ Division to the Girls’ Division and the person whom we appoint will play a key role in introducing the subject in the Girls’ Division in Year 12 (September 2021) and then building upon this with Year 13 students from September 2022.

The successful candidate will be committed to the welfare and individual development of all the pupils in his/her care. A willingness and ability to develop, lead and participate in extra curricular activities and trips, including keeping the Department open out of school hours for girls to have access to the Art facilities, are essential.   S/he will be expected to teach from Year 7 to A Level. S/he will be fully computer literate; all the girls receive an iPad and class teachers must be prepared to teach girls who are self-isolating on the iPad. Good communication skills, oral and written, are also essential. A detailed person specification is included with the application pack.

The school has a strong commitment to professional development. Teaching staff currently teach a maximum of 45 periods per fortnight (out of a timetable of 60 periods per cycle) and Heads of Department currently have an additional time allowance.

The Department

The Art Department currently consists of one full time member of staff (the Acting Head of Department) and two part time Art teachers, one of whom is retiring at the end of this academic year. From September 2021, it will be led by a new Head of Department, supported by one part time member of staff and the person who takes on this post. Teachers are passionate about their Art and convey this to pupils of all ages, who have confidence in the teaching which they receive.

Art is very popular in Key Stage 3: many girls joining Year 7 say that it is their favourite subject and one of the reasons why they choose to come to Bolton School. Girls are taught the formal elements through a range of exciting projects using a wide range of media, including ceramics.

Art is one of a number of options in the Creative and Expressive arts at GCSE, alongside Design Technology, Textiles, Music and Drama.

A level is taught as a two-year course in the Girls’ Division and currently has a leaning towards Fine Art. An increasing number of girls who wish to study Graphic Communication at A Level currently study in the Boys’ Division. However, the AQA course allows for girls to choose a number of different pathways (Art, Craft & Design, Fine Art, Graphic Communication, Textile Design, Three Dimensional Design & Photography) and for AS to be taught alongside A Level.

Each year a number of students go on to study Art and Design at degree and foundation level. Architecture and Engineering are also popular options, for which the Art portfolio often produces invaluable evidence.

The Department has three specialist and well-equipped Art rooms (two large classrooms and a Sixth Form Studio) as well as office and storage space. There are two kilns.

The Department is open before and/or after school as well as during the lunchtimes in order to offer extra curricular ‘clubs’ for younger pupils and to give GCSE and A Level students access to the studios and resources so that they can pursue their independent work. A willingness to help with such events at lunchtimes or out of school hours is essential. The best of pupils’ work is displayed around School and/or published in the School magazine.

Bolton School

Bolton School Girls’ Division is a thriving, academically selective school, which caters for 1,000 girls aged between 3 and 18 years. It is part of the Bolton School Foundation, sharing facilities, expertise and a magnificent 32 acre campus with the Boys’ Division and offering pupils single sex education in a co-educational environment - ‘the best of both worlds’. The school is situated in an attractive, prosperous part of Bolton with easy access to some of the nation’s finest cities and countryside. In 2019, Bolton School was named as the ‘Times Educational Supplement’s’ Independent Senior School of the Year and was awarded the ultimate accolade of Independent School of the Year. One in five of the pupils in the Senior School attends on a means-tested Bursary and the Governors have a realistic aim for this to be one in three by 2030. The pupil community reflects the ethnic diversity of the town of Bolton; the current teaching body is less diverse and there is a desire to improve this through new appointments to the staff body.

The Bolton School Foundation is one of the largest in the country, with over 2,300 students in total, as well as over 500 staff.  On the main campus, there are two single sex Junior schools, two single sex Senior schools and a mixed Infants’ school and Nursery. The current Headmistress is a member of the GSA and the Headmaster of HMC. The Bolton School Foundation also owns playing fields and a School Scout group headquarters building near to the main campus as well as Patterdale Hall, a 60-bed converted Victorian mansion in its own estate on the shores of Ullswater in northern Cumbria, which serves as our Outdoor Activities’ Centre and which is available for use by Departments for school trips.

How to Apply

For further details, including information about the school’s last inspection report, and to apply online for the position, please visit the school website at www.boltonschool.org or contact the Headmistress’s PA, Miss Hannah Caulfield, via email (hcaulfield@boltonschool.org.uk) or on 01204 840201 extension 210. Prospective candidates are welcome to visit the school if national or local Covid restrictions allow and/ or speak to a member of the Senior Leadership Team in advance of their application.

Closing date for applications: Monday 10th May at 9am. Initial short listing may include a telephone or ‘zoom’ interview with the Headmistress on that date or prior to that date for promising early applications.

Final interviews will be held in person in a Covid secure manner. Candidates who are asked to attend at interview will need to bring examples or photographs of students’ work and if possible, examples of their own work.

Bolton School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and to equality and diversity in all aspects of employment. The successful candidate will be required to undertake an Enhanced check for Regulated Activity.

Why You Should Choose to Work at Bolton School

Academic Excellence

The curriculum is delivered by a highly qualified, experienced and dedicated teaching staff, who create an industrious but supportive working environment where pupils are motivated to learn. We are an academically selective school and we focus on stretching and challenging every child as we encourage scholarship to ensure each pupil reaches his or her full academic potential.

Academic results at GCSE and A Level consistently place us amongst the top schools in the North of England and often within the top 100 nationally. The vast majority of our students progress on to their first choice university and we have a regular flow of sixth formers to highly competitive courses and universities.

An Incredible Array of Extra-Curricular Activity

Pupils enjoy an incredibly diverse and strong extra-curricular programme, which offers unique opportunities, challenges and fun.

Each year, both Senior Schools offer over 100 clubs and activities and a wide range of options and interests are also available to pupils in the Junior Schools and Infant School. Outside the classroom, we hold an enviable reputation for sports, with pupil success at regional, national and international level. Our aim is to encourage all students, whatever their level, to achieve their personal best. Drama and music are also particularly strong at the School and there are numerous ensembles, choirs and orchestras as well as large-scale regular joint productions.

Pupils undertake many foreign and residential trips, including regular visits to our own outdoor pursuits centre, Patterdale Hall, in the Lake District.

Pastoral

Behaviour at the School is excellent. Each school within the Foundation places great emphasis on its pastoral provision and teachers build strong relationships with pupils. In Senior School, guidance, support and encouragement are provided by the pastoral team, which comprises the Subject Teacher, the Form Tutor, the Head of Year, Heads of School/Section and Deputy Heads. Any problems are dealt with rapidly, either by the staff team or the School Nurses.

There is a sense of purpose and challenge within the School, but this is built on an atmosphere that is friendly, supportive and, above all, happy.  As pupils grow through the School they develop the independence and self-motivation that will allow them to thrive when they leave.

Outstanding Facilities

All of our schools, from Nursery to Sixth Form, are on site and pupils make use of our outstanding facilities set in 32 acres of grounds.

The School combines heritage and modernity. With a history stretching back over 500 years, the School provides a local landmark on Chorley New Road with its imposing pink sandstone buildings replete with Neo-Gothic façade and turrets.

In September 2013, the opening of the new Riley Sixth Form Centre marked the latest phase in an £18m building project which saw the construction of a new state-of-the-art Junior Girls’ School (Hesketh House) and Infant School and the refurbishment and extension of our Junior Boys' School.

"The Levels" provide a running track and numerous high quality football, rugby, lacrosse and cricket pitches and nets. There are netball courts on site and at Leverhulme Pavilion, where there are also hockey and lacrosse pitches (a new sports surface was laid in 2019) and tennis courts, which is a short walk from the School.

The Arts and Conference Centre, opened by Diana, Princess of Wales, in 1993, provides a first-class auditorium and theatre as well as a swimming pool and Sports Hall. Other facilities include a multi-gym, theatres, well-stocked libraries and gymnasiums in both Senior Schools, where there are also outstanding Technology and Science laboratories and Art studios.

Pupils also benefit from time spent at the School's adventure learning centre, Patterdale Hall, which is located on the southern shores of Ullswater in the Lake District.

Engagement with the Community

The School is, and always has been, inextricably linked with the local community. It is a central part of our ethos that pupils engage with the real world and that when they leave the School they will make a positive contribution to society. It is through the interaction with local, national and international concerns that pupils learn about topical issues and develop a sense of their place in the world.

A Thriving Former Pupils' Network

A very active network of old boys and old girls spans the globe.  There are regular reunions both at the School and in major cities and towns throughout the UK. Successful former pupils, both young and old, regularly return to the School where they enjoy sharing their expertise and life experiences with current pupils.

The School has a history of producing top class scholars and achievers and our illustrious former pupils' network spreads across many disciplines. The Old Girls’ Association and the Old Boltonians’ Association include household names such as Sir Ian McKellen, Nigel Short, Monica Ali, Kate Long, Baroness Taylor of Bolton, the Nobel Prize Winner Sir Harry Kroto, Dame Janet Smith, Baroness Morris of Bolton, Mark Radcliffe and Ralf Little.

Diversity

Pupils come from diverse backgrounds and, currently, over 300 pupils receive bursary-assisted places with approximately half of them receiving full fee assistance.

Our secure private coach service covers over 20 routes meaning the School is accessible to a wide area.

Ethnically, the make-up of the School reflects exactly that of the local region.

School Inspection Reports

The School is inspected regularly by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI).

The last inspection of the Boys' Division (Junior and Senior Boys' School) found it to be excellent in all areas.

The Girls' Division (co-educational Nursery and Infant School and Junior and Senior Girls' Schools) was described as excellent in all areas with the Early Years' Foundation Stage (0-5 years old) also receiving the top judgement of being "outstanding" in every category.
