Job overview

Canbury School provides a unique environment, for both students and staff alike. A co-educational day secondary school with a maximum of 75 students on roll and no more than 15 children in each year and class, we are small, and deliberately so. We provide a high level of care and very good educational facilities up to A-Level and each student is treated very much as an individual, hence our motto “Embracing Difference, Harnessing Talent"

Conveniently reached from all of South-West London and Surrey, it’s now an exciting time to join this friendly, close-knit and supportive team, and be an integral part of its continuing success. We offer an exciting career opportunity for someone who wants to make a contribution to the development of the high standards of achievement and attainment evident in the school.

The successful applicant will:

  • Have significant experience of working with children and/or young people with special needs and be committed to continual professional development
  • Have a can-do attitude, a desire and willingness to commit to further training and the high energy levels required when working with children with autism.
  • Be ambitious to support and extend the learning opportunities for all of our pupils.
  • Have a commitment to working in partnership with Teachers, Learning Support staff, Speech and Language Therapists, other staff, parents and the community to reduce the barriers to learning that children and young people with autism face and promote excellent learning opportunities for all.

You will receive professional development to meet your individual needs and a very supportive Headteacher and SENCO to mentor you throughout your career at Canbury School.

The students are the heart of everything we do, so you will be happy to contribute to the range of tasks associated with a busy, successful school and be willing to go the extra mile to make their experience as enriching as possible.

For more information on the role, please review the job description. CV will not be considered.

Closing Date: 12 June 2020

Canbury School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act.

Why Canbury?

We do things differently at Canbury - because we understand that everyone is unique, as such we know that the manner in which we educate and support our students must also embrace those differences to ensure that we harness their individual talents.

If you thrive on seeing the opportunities in a situation, rather than the challenges, then we want to hear from you. We are seeking a talented individual with a ‘can do’ attitude. The Director of Studies will be so much more than the job title.

All staff here act, teach, foster, and mentor in a way designed to bring out the very best in every one of our extraordinary students. We expect the utmost mutual respect from all, and working as part of a team is vital. You should be able to work constructively within a cohesive and busy school.

About our School

Canbury School is an independent day school for boys and girls from the ages of 11 to 18 on the outskirts of London beside Richmond Park. With a total of 75 students on roll, we pride ourselves on truly getting to know each one of our students. All our staff are expected to contribute to the values and ethos of Canbury, making the educational journey for each child stimulating, enjoyable, challenging, and tailored.

We are proud of our broad curriculum, the wide range of qualifications we offer, and the support we are able to provide through small group teaching and, where appropriate, specialist therapists or learning support assistants.

Our School community is a happy and inclusive one, where students support and respect each other. We understand that a child’s well-being is as equally important as their academic achievements, as such we enable students to feel safe, understood, and settled in school.

If you think Canbury School would be a good fit for you, and you for us, we are really looking forward to hearing from you
