Job overview

Main responsibilities: To overview the standards of teaching and learning and pastoral well-being of the Upper School.  


Reporting to: Head of School / Deputy Head 


Responsible for: Teaching staff and any other relevant staff within the Upper School setting. 


Main purpose: The Assistant Head under the direction of the Head of School will take a role in:  


● Maintaining an all-through approach to the school by being visible, helping, leading, and managing all phases of the school as required. 

● Leading the Middle Leadership Team in monitoring progress towards the achievement of the phase action plans. 

● Be knowledgeable and have an understanding of our curriculum and ethos in all phases.


The Assistant Head will also have a timetabled teaching commitment of complying with the teachers’ standards and is expected to model best practices for others. 


Duties and responsibilities: 

Leadership 


● Support the Head of School and Deputy Head Pastoral in the day-to-day operations of the school  

● Communicate the school’s vision compellingly and support the SLT strategic leadership  

● Be able to pro-actively make evidence-informed decisions and find solutions.

● Lead by example, focusing on providing an excellent education for all pupils  

● Lead on particular whole-school strategies and policy areas 

● Build positive relationships with members of the school community 

● Keep up to date with developments in education and have expertise in evidence-informed teaching and learning strategies.   

● Commit to their professional development, proactively identifying development opportunities 

● Lead and present selected whole-school CPD sessions to implement strategies and initiatives and share the best evidence-informed teaching and learning practices with others in the school,

● Assist with the selection and recruitment of new teaching staff  

● Performance manage Middle Leaders, including carrying out appraisals, providing professional development opportunities, and holding staff to account for their performance  

● Create an ethos within which teachers are motivated and supported to develop their skills and knowledge to develop confidence and skills in others. 





Teaching and Learning

● Demonstrate excellent performance against parts one and two of the teachers’ standards: teaching and personal and professional conduct  

● Ensure the principles of great teaching and learning principles are consistently applied in the school and align with curriculum planning.  

● Undertake regular learning walks in all school phases and give instructional coaching feedback as appropriate to individual teachers.

● Conduct and analyse pupil surveys of teaching and learning and communicate findings with SLT and individual teachers.


Assessment  

● Have a good overview of pupil performance in all phases of the school and, working with MLT, plan, implement and monitor the impact of interventions for those pupils who are not making at least satisfactory progress. 


Pastoral  

● Establish and implement whole-school systems for pupil well-being, disciple and behaviour.

● Work with our subject coordinators and Grade Leaders to conduct and analyse the results of pupil voice surveys to ensure they feel happy and safe in school, championing the importance of pupil voice to the senior leadership team  

● Provide staff with training and support so they can play a part in enhancing pupils’ personal development  

● Promote and evaluate the effectiveness of the school’s behaviour policy and strategies  

● Monitor pupil attendance and ensure it is continuously improving  

● Analyse data on attendance, behaviour, and well-being to inform future improvement strategies 



Other responsibilities: The Assistant Head of Upper School will be required to safeguard and promote children's and young people's welfare and follow school policies and the staff code of conduct.

Wycombe Abbey School Hangzhou is a K-12 Coeducational Bilingual British style boarding and day school in Hangzhou, China. There are currently around 600 pupils on roll. The school opened in 2021. The school is an Accredited Member of COBIS and a member of the BSA.

Kindergarten follows the EYFS curriculum and from Year 2 to Year 10 there is an integrated curriculum. Pupils take IGCSE and A Level examinations in the Upper School.

Wycombe Abbey Hangzhou is one of three Wycombe Abbey Schools in the mainland of China, there is also a school in Hong Kong. The ‘mother’ school is Wycombe Abbey Uk.

The school is located about 30 minutes from the centre of Hangzhou. Hangzhou is the 4th largest city in China with a population of about 10 million. The 19th Asian Games took place in Hangzhou in September 2023. Hangzhou is one of the ancient capitals of China and has been a commercial and cultural centre since the 6th Century CE. Famous for its silk industry and the tourist attraction West Lake, the city is now a bustling tech hub. The HQ of Alibaba is based in the city. It is a modern forward looking and cosmopolitan city.
