Job overview

About you

We are looking for an enthusiastic, dynamic and well-qualified individual who has significant middle leadership experience. Joining the SLT, you will help lead and support the school through an exciting transition period of island secondary education, whilst taking responsibility for Pastoral Leadership.

We are looking for someone who is passionate about raising learners’ individual achievements with innovative ideas to build on existing good practice. Alongside being able to demonstrate excellence in teaching and learning, you should also be committed to make a full contribution to the ethos, identity and life of the school.

About the Education Service

St Sampson's High School currently operates as part of the Guernsey Federation of Secondary Schools which includes St Sampson’s, Les Beaucamps and Guernsey Grammar School and Sixth Form, alongside St Anne’s School in Alderney. Secondary and Post-16 education is undergoing a period of exciting change on the Island, which includes a planned new structure with one 11-18 all ability school on two sites.

The drivers in Secondary phase education for this significant transformation are: equality of educational experience and outcomes, equality of opportunity and access, and efficient and effective use of resources.

Employed by the States of Guernsey and based at St Sampson's High School, you will maximise opportunities for collaborative working, teaching and learning across Key Stages and shared professional development across schools. There is an expectation that you will engage in cross-school collaboration which may require working on more than one site to meet the needs of the Education Service. The transition plans for the new structure may also mean you will work from an alternative site.

Benefits

This is an excellent opportunity to join a highly regarded senior team and become part of our happy, vibrant school community. We invest in strong relationships and high quality learning opportunities, as well as our dedicated staff.

This post carries an eight-year employment permit. If appointed, you can also expect to:

  • Benefit from the stunning scenery and enviable quality of life;
  • Work in a well-resourced school with favourable PTRs;
  • Receive a generous relocation package to the island, including rent allowance;

Values and vision

St Sampson's High School aims to help motivate students by raising their expectations. Students are often encouraged to work effectively with each other in  small group collaborative tasks and to be respectful of each other’s views and contributions. The school aims for students to make a significant contribution to their wider community through, for example, participation in sponsored events to raise school funds, support for local senior citizens’ care homes, raising funds for international disaster relief efforts and through acting as buddies and mentors for their junior peers. Importance is also placed on providing a broad range of activities and experiences planned beyond the classroom which enrich pupils’ learning. This is why the school prides itself on having strong links with local sports clubs in rugby, cricket, athletics and football with competitive school fixtures across a number of sports for both girls and boys at all stages. The school also looks to extend pupils’ experiences beyond the school through off-site visits to other facilities and centres within Guernsey (such as Footes Lane for athletics) and international visits beyond Guernsey (such as to France and Italy).
