Job overview

Assistant Headteacher

Director of Science with a whole school responsibility

The JCB Academy was established in September 2010, the first of a brand new kind of school in the UK, with a focus on delivering high-quality engineering and business education.

Since opening we have been consistently successful - our first Ofsted inspection, in May 2014, recognised us as a “Good” school with “outstanding” features, including progress in mathematics, engineering and vocational courses and the dedication to keeping learners safe and secure.  Learner numbers are growing - we have been oversubscribed every year, including for entry this September.  Currently we cater for approximately 580 full time learners aged 14-18 as well as approximately 300 learners aged 16+ following apprenticeships.  We have exciting plans to expand further due to the demand for places; this will include Y9 for the first time from September 2018.

We are now looking for a dynamic and inspirational individual to join our Senior Leadership Team (taking on a whole school responsibility which will be discussed at interview) and lead our Science Team. This is a fantastic opportunity to work in partnership with some of the biggest names in engineering and design.

About Science at The JCB Academy

At KS4, learners follow an integrated curriculum which is delivered through a series of engineering/business challenges in partnership with specialist teams from our challenge partners including JCB, Harper Adams University, HSBC, KPMG, National Grid, Network Rail, Toyota, Rolls Royce, Bosch Rexroth and Parker.  STEM is at the heart of the curriculum and all learners from Y9-Y11 study physics, chemistry and biology for two hours per subject per week.  The majority then undertake the combined GCSE.  Results have been excellent, although dropped in 2017.  Physics, chemistry and biology are offered in the sixth form, with take up in physics being particularly strong.

If successful, you will:

  • Set high expectations and foster a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Work collaboratively with the three Science Team Leaders to develop and deliver an engaging curriculum that sits within the challenge cycles.
  • Benefit from working with small class sizes, outstanding science labs and cutting edge ICT.
  • Have access to superb professional development and a competitive salary.
  • Work in a supportive environment with professionals who are down-to-earth and committed to the aims of the academy.

If you are a qualified Science Teacher able to demonstrate high quality teaching and the ability to lead a team we would be keen to hear from you.  This may be your first SLT position or you may be an experienced leader eager for a new challenge and the opportunity to work in a unique environment with fantastic facilities. You must have a passion for developing engineers of the future.

The academy is located in Rocester, Staffordshire in an adapted and renovated mill,  built by the famous industrial entrepreneur and engineer, Richard Arkwright, in the late 18th century.

Values and vision

The JCB Academy aims to change lives by developing the engineer and business leaders of the future.  We do this by:

  • Working closely with our world-leading industrial partners.
  • Having dedicated staff who inspire our learners.
  • Ensuring every learner has a meaningful destination.

We work tirelessly to ensure that those entrusted into our care have every chance to achieve success. It is important that learners achieve well academically to ensure that they can compete in the marketplace for higher education places and employment. It is also important that we work to develop those core skills essential for success, not just in the world of work but also in life. The JCB Academy looks to ensure that all learning enables young people to develop:

  • Can do/positive attitudes.
  • The desire to achieve through actions.
  • Creative and enterprising behaviours.
  • A willingness to learn in the pursuit of technical and academic excellence.
  • Team work and leadership capability.

We have high expectations of each and every learner who will join us. Great store is placed upon self-discipline, good behaviour, uniform, teamwork and co-operation. These traditional values are at the heart of all we undertake at The JCB Academy.

The JCB Academy is a demanding and stimulating place to work. One where you will be supported to achieve your very best in a fantastic working environment.

Ofsted

“Students make outstanding progress in mathematics, engineering and most vocational courses. Many students enter apprenticeships, higher education courses and careers which reflect the characteristics of the University Technical College and its high reputation in the engineering and business industries and professions. Leadership, including governance, is good and improving. As a result, all groups of students are making sustained progress and most are achieving well.”
