Job overview
Burford School is a highly successful 11-18 rural comprehensive school with Academy status. Established in 1571, we currently have around 1200 students on roll with a strong Sixth Form of over 200 students. Situated high above the town of Burford, on the eastern edge of the Cotswolds, the school includes a Boarding House with just under 100 boarders from both the UK and abroad.
We serve a widespread rural community and close links are maintained with our nine partner Primary Schools which provide two thirds of our annual intake of approximately 200 students. Some students travel considerable distances from beyond our catchment area to take up places at the school due to its excellent reputation for academic success, extra-curricular activities and pastoral care, and the growing Sixth Form attracts new members each year. Our aim is to recruit colleagues who will be stimulated by the prospect of working hard to share in our success.
Burford School is at an exciting time in its development. We have outstanding examination results both at GCSE and ‘A’ Level, and a commitment to maintaining our extensive co-curricular provision. The excellent education we provide has led to the school being heavily oversubscribed; this, combined with the Deputy Headteacher being promoted to headship, has enabled us to restructure and expand the Senior Leadership Team.
As a result, we have this exciting opportunity for an Assistant Headteacher responsible for Teaching, Learning and Assessment to join our thriving school.

Burford School was founded by Charter in 1571 and has been maintained continually since that date. The school was developed as a County School from 1929 when the Foundation admitted girls. In 1957 the school moved up the hill to its present 36 acre site. The Boarding House and surrounding staff accommodation occupy the historic site of the original Grammar school in the town. The attractive, listed, buildings provide varied facilities within a safe environment. This history has given Burford a unique flavour but is a school of the 21st century.
