Job overview
Assistant Subject Leader - English
Salary: MPS/UPS + TLR 2b (£4,352) available
To start: Easter 2018
Horizon Community College, Barnsley, opened in September 2012. With nearly £50 million worth of investment, facilities in this new Community College are among the very best in the country. In July 2014, Ofsted judged that ‘Horizon Community College is a good school. Attainment has improved rapidly in all year groups since the college opened.’
In 2017, under the new grading system, 61% of Horizon students gained 5 A*-C or equivalent, including English and Maths. This followed 2016 figures that were 8% above the national average, building on excellent performances in the College’s first four years and placing Horizon’s results in the top 27% of schools nationally. English Language and Literature results under the grading system have continued to prosper, with 77% of students (in a cohort of nearly 400) achieving a grade 4 or higher, 59% of these achieving the new ‘Strong’ pass grade of a 5 or above, and 18% of students at grade 7 or higher.
The College is delighted to be able to offer the right candidate the opportunity to join a very successful department within an ambitious and successful school environment.
“The college’s current data, supported by inspection evidence, shows they are currently on track to achieve above average standards in English.”
“The most rapid progress is made by students in English”
Horizon’s most recent Ofsted report, July 2014
The English department is adapting very successfully to the changing demands of the new curriculum, making this an extremely exciting time to join them. English has an experienced team of staff that are passionate about their subject, enthusiastic about curricular innovation and committed to improving student outcomes, all of which has enabled the department to thrive during the first few years of Horizon. Above all, a Horizon English teacher is someone with a fierce love of their subject who is talented, motivated and can inspire students to achieve their full potential. A particular strength for staff that are new to the profession is that they can also expect to be individually supported within the department by English colleagues with designated mentoring responsibilities.
As part of this dynamic and successful team, you must be committed to achieving the highest standards and will possess the creativity to maximise the use of state-of-the-art resources and facilities. In return, you can expect to join a supportive, aspirational and hard-working department that spearheads the drive for improved literacy standards whilst placing English Literature at the heart of its curriculum.
Horizon offers the successful candidate a whole-hearted commitment to professional learning that places individual development at the heart of its ethos. You will also benefit from opportunities to learn as part of a dynamic, forward-facing leadership team with an outstanding track record in school improvement.
