About the Role

The Canteen Manager conducts the day-to-day operation of the canteen while ensuring the effectiveness and safety of operations being carried out in the work areas, making sure equipment and utensils are in a clean and orderly condition. Duties will also include assisting with the preparation of food, service at Recess and Lunchtime and clean up after service of over 1300 staff and students and managing the canteen, including the canteen and catering budget.

Key Responsibilities

The responsibilities of a Canteen Manager include but not limited to:

  • Responsible for managing school canteen
  • Rostering and supervising other staff and volunteers
  • Managing a budget and overseeing banking functions and the payment of accounts
  • Streamline/ improve financial reporting of canteen takings on a daily basis
  • Stocktakes at least once a term, including reducing food waste
  • Design daily menu plans, taking dietary needs into consideration
  • Responsible for catering for functions as needed
  • Responsibility for ordering and purchasing goods for resale
  • Overseeing the preparation of goods for sale, and maintaining a detailed knowledge of client needs, pricing policies and products
  • Assists and prepares/cooks/serves food and drink orders for daily operation
  • Provide quality canteen and catering customer service including food production and food preparation duties, counter service, clearing tables and cleaning duties
  • Provide a clean, hygienic environment for the preparation, storage and safe handling of food
  • Follow procedure regarding food preparation and adhere to daily menu plans
  • The ability to create dishes when required
  • Washes up during operations
  • Ensures detergent and paper towel dispensers are restocked daily
  • Ensures bins are emptied daily and recycling and compost are deal with accordingly
  • Undertakes end of term cleaning of the canteen equipment and area
  • Promote a safe, secure environment for staff, students and visitors
  • Follow Workplace Health and Safety Practices to ensure that the canteen and equipment is operated and maintained in a safe and hygienic manner
  • Participate in purpose-based networks, team activities, performance management processes and professional development and training programs

Essential Criteria

It is essential that the successful applicant have:

  • Extensive hospitality and chef experience
  • Management experience of several staff
  • Proficient in managing high-volume food production during peak operational periods
  • Applies in-depth knowledge and a broad range of skills in a variety of roles and tasks
  • Uses discretion and judgement in planning and organising and achieving outcomes in time constraints
  • Works under general direction. A General Employee at this level may work semi-autonomously (if working alone). A General Employee at this level may be required to supervise other School Operational Services Employees
