Our Vision and Values

We want every one of our students and members of staff to enjoy coming to our school and for all of us to try our very best in everything we do. We aim to help everybody gain the knowledge, skills and habits that can lead to a happy and successful life, both now and in the future. We summarise these aims as: “Valuing People, Supporting Personal Best”.

We believe that helping people feel valued increases the chances of them achieving their personal best, which is the highest standard we can expect anybody to achieve. We have five guiding values which we use to remind ourselves of how we want all of us to act at all times:

Consideration   - We treat everybody as we would wish to be treated

Communication - We listen, explain and check understanding

Commitment - We keep trying until we have given our absolute best

Collaboration - We help people work together effectively

Celebration - We build confidence by recognising contributions and efforts.

Professional development

We aim to provide the very best professional and career development opportunities for all our staff. Being the lead sponsor of SHARE Multi Academy Trust, we offer a range of training and staff development opportunities, including visits to our partner schools, shared CPD sessions and sharing best practice across the trust.

In addition, we are extremely pleased to have the Calderdale and Kirklees Teaching School Hub based at Shelley College, delivering teacher training (ITT), the Early Career Framework (ECF) and the National Professional Qualifications.

At Shelley College and across many of our partner schools we have a number of Specialist Leaders of Education (SLE’s), Excellent and Lead Practitioners, trained ITT mentors, as well as outstanding leaders who offer the highest level of support and training. We provide staff with the opportunity to lead and support training across the trust. They also have access to nationally accredited courses including the Improving Teacher Programme (ITP), Outstanding Teacher Programme (OTP), NPQML, NPQSL and NPQH, as well as leading on research projects.

We operate a supportive appraisal system, allowing individual staff to develop their career through specific targets and training, as well as supporting our whole school priorities. There are many examples of how staff at Shelley have benefited from this high level of investment resulting in rapid career progression. Whatever your role or whatever your career plans, we can help you achieve them.

We are in located in the village of Skelmanthorpe in the Huddersfield/Kirklees district. We have possibly the best rural location of any secondary school in the country, but are still in close proximity to a number of towns and cities including Leeds, Manchester and Sheffield. Due to the excellent road links, journey times are minimal, with many of our staff travelling from these areas on a daily basis.

In recent years, we have invested millions of pounds to improve our facilities. Some examples include a fully refurbished library, annual improvements to our ICT infrastructure and equipment, state of the art science labs, art classrooms, new outdoor social areas, a new main hall, new dining areas for staff and students, new outdoor floodlit sports facilities and brand-new toilets throughout college.

In addition to the Share Multi-Academy Trust benefits that are offered to all employees, there are staff benefits that are specific to Shelley College. Extra-curricular clubs aren’t only for students! Staff activities have included sports such as badminton tournaments and creative ventures such as clay club.

Excursions and trips have a strong history at Shelley College and staff are encouraged to get involved. In recent years trips have included art trips to Paris or Amsterdam, ski trips to Italy and Camps International trips to Kenya.

Our staff are our most valuable asset. They are friendly and supportive of each other and there is a strong sense of a committed team working together.
