The college opened in September 2016 and provides education for students of all abilities from Key Stage 4 and above who would like to pursue a career in design and engineering.

UTCs are government-funded schools that teach 14-19 year old students technical and scientific subjects with a new approach; they are educating the inventors, engineers, scientists and technicians of tomorrow.

The concept of UTCs was created by Lord Baker and Lord Dearing with the aim of bridging the skills gap by linking Industry with education. The Baker Dearing Educational Trust (BDT) was founded to develop and promote the concept of University Technical Colleges.
