Teaching and Learning

  • Leading and inspiring boys with a passion for learning, with the highest standards and expectations.
  • Delivering excellent teaching across school, following agreed guidelines, syllabuses and Schemes of Work.
  • Creating a cheerful, well-organised and stimulating classroom climate that will motivate boys to learn, think independently, empathise with others, and perform to the best of their abilities.
  • Understanding the academic, physical, emotional and spiritual needs of boys in the class and planning appropriate tasks to maintain a close match between the work offered and those needs.
  • Supporting boys in their learning, making every boy feel included, secure and valued, and ensuring they have every opportunity to fulfil their potential.
  • Preparing thoroughly for lessons and setting prep regularly in line with school expectations.
  • Utilising a wide range of digital and physical resources to enhance learning, as well as planning engaging visits, speakers and trips.
  • Creating informative and well-presented classroom displays and noticeboards, celebrating successes.
  • Marking work regularly and in line with the marking policy and the Schemes of Work to ensure that boys receive constructive feedback.
  • Assessing, recording and reporting on the development, progress and attainment of boys, employing effective intervention strategies when required to extend their achievement.
  • Producing on request detailed reports on the progress/achievement of any boy taught.
  • Attending all meetings relevant to the role and responsibilities, and attending all parents’ evenings for groups taught, as well as other events as directed by the Headmaster.
  • Communicating effectively with parents and boys, maintaining high standards and expectations in line with our ‘Promoting Positive Behaviour Policy’.
  • Promoting boys’ achievements, career opportunities and experiences, providing relevant material for the school website, social media channels and newsletter.
  • Providing guidance and advice to boys on matters related to their progress and development, and when working towards scholarships for senior schools.


Pastoral Responsibilities

  • Undertaking pastoral responsibilities as directed and working with pastoral leads to support the welfare of the boys.
  • Being a tutor if requested, encompassing academic, pastoral and administrative oversight and acting as the main point of contact for parents.

  • Playing a full part in the life of the school community, supporting its mission, ethos and policies.
  • Setting high personal standards of dress and appearance, attendance/punctuality and class discipline/behaviour, upholding the staff code of conduct at all times.
  • Maintaining good order and discipline amongst the boys and being active in implementing the school’s policies on rewards and interventions.
  • Actively engaging in safeguarding practice and health and safety supervision, both in school and on external visits.
  • Attend fortnightly INSET sessions that aid personal development, the teaching and learning of the boys and the smooth running of the school.
  • Liaising with the Headmaster, Deputy Head, Director of Studies, Head of Individual Development (SENCO) and colleagues regarding information concerning the needs and abilities of individual boys.
  • Ensuring equal access to the classroom for all boys.
  • Undertaking supervisory, cover and invigilation duties as directed.
  • Taking an active involvement in co-curricular activities within the curriculum and by offering a club that offers further
  • opportunities for the boys outside of timetabled lessons.
  • Committing to personal professional development, including active engagement in staff training and the performance review process.
  • Complying with relevant school policies and procedures at all times.

  • Relevant degree with high honours
  • DfE recognised teaching qualification

Knowledge

  • Evidence of appropriate continued personal and professional development

Aldwickbury is a highly regarded and established preparatory school, having been founded in Harpenden in 1937, moving to the current site in 1948. The school occupies a fine Victorian house in pleasant country surrounds. The facilities and resources are very good and the premises are well equipped and are set in twenty acres of grounds. The school is run as a charitable company and is a member of I.A.P.S., the Boarding Schools Association and the International Boys’ School Coalition. 

There are approximately 250 boys in Years 3 to 8, and another 125 boys in our Pre-Preparatory department. Boys from Year 5 may board and some 50 do so on a flexible basis. Boys leave Aldwickbury at 13+ via Common Entrance, entry tests or scholarship examinations for senior independent schools such as St Albans, Bedford, Haileybury, St Columba’s, Berkhamsted, H.A.B.S., Harrow, The Leys, M.T.S. and Oundle.  

Aldwickbury looks to develop boys’ self-esteem and ensure that they reach their potential in all aspects of school life. The boys’ achievements in classwork, drama, art, music, sport and so on are celebrated whenever possible. The school is busy and purposeful; visitors often comment on the friendly open nature of the boys. The Staff Common Room is happy and dedicated; in service training is encouraged and provided for all members of staff.
