Currently, Midlothian has 6 secondary schools, 32 primary schools (19 of which have nurseries) and 2 stand alone nursery schools. Our special school, Saltersgate, provides support for children with a range of physical, social, emotional, behavioural and learning difficulties. The schools range in size from our smallest primary school with around 20 children to our largest secondary with over 1200 pupils. We have a diverse range of school catchments, from rural to urban settings. We are fortunate to have a growing number of new build schools, with 15 of our primary schools and 1 secondary having been built within the last 10 years and several new builds planned.
Newtongrange Primary School is built next to the park in the centre of the community in the village of Newtongrange. The school is led by Miss Morgan, HT, and Mr McBride, DHT. There are currently 15 primary classes from P1 – P7 and a Nursery with places for 50 children to attend in the morning and 40 in the afternoon. We have a highly committed group of teachers and Learning Assistants who lead and support learning. Staff, pupils and parents are also supported by our admin team in the Main Office, Nursery Teacher and 4 4 Child Care Development Workers (CCDW). Playground and Dinner hall supervisors help the children to develop play, stay safe and enjoy the wider experiences in school. There is a popular Breakfast and After School Club on site.
We are well supported by our parents and carers, working together to provide engaging and stimulating learning experiences for the children. We have high expectations and the children are proud to share their successes with their families through Parent Consultations, musical and drama presentations, Soft Art, Science Fair and Open Days. Many parents and carers regularly work in school to give individuals and groups of children additional help.
Pupil attainment is good and classroom learning for the Board General Education is enhanced by work in the local environment, trips and visitors. Children are happy and confident in the school. In the upper primary classes all participate in Pupil Voice Groups where they are actively involved in decision making. We are a very musical school and in addition to visiting specialists for music, art and PE, children can participate in woodwind, strings and brass instrumental tuition. P4 classes have the opportunity to study violin for 2 years through a YMI project.
