Job overview

Li Po Chun United World College (LPCUWC) now invites applications for the role of College Principal to succeed Dr Arnett Edwards, who will step down in August 2023 after twelve years of successful leadership of the College.

About United World Colleges (UWCs)

United World Colleges (UWC) is a global movement that makes education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future. UWC inspires young people to put their talents and energy into social change, no matter which future path they choose. Information about the UWC movement may be found here: https://www.uwc.org/

About Li Po Chun United World College

Li Po Chun United World College is one of the oldest and most well-established UWCs in Asia, inspiring change makers for 30 years.

LPCUWC is a fully residential secondary school offering the two-year IB Diploma Programme (IBDP) to over 250 students from around the world each year. As a full boarding school, all LPCUWC students reside at the beautiful and spacious campus in Wu Kai Sha, New Territories. The teaching faculty, including the College Principal, live on site.

LPCUWC is unique among schools in Hong Kong, with the strengths and special characteristics of both a “local” and an “international” school. LPCUWC is the most international school in Hong Kong, with over 90 nationalities represented within its student body. At the same time, LPCUWC is also a school with deep local roots, with over 40% of students coming from within Hong Kong, and it is one of Hong Kong’s Direct Subsidy Scheme (DSS) schools subsidized by the Hong Kong government.

More information about LPCUWC can be found here: https://www.lpcuwc.edu.hk/

About the Role

The Board seeks an outstanding College Principal to lead LPCUWC through a strategically critical next chapter in its evolution. As LPCUWC marks its 30th anniversary and the 50th anniversary of Hong Kong’s involvement in UWC Movement, the College Principal will have the opportunity to lead the College through a strategic revisioning to identify and realise new ways to promote educational innovation across a range of areas – from engaging with global conversations about the evolution of the IB and how to apply this within the specific context of LPCUWC, to improving the digital architecture of the College and enhancing the role of technology in the curriculum, to seeking ways to help students continue to develop the social and emotional skills they will need to thrive.

The successful candidate will be an inspirational educationalist with a track record of successful senior leadership and a readiness to lead within a residential school context. He or she will be a compelling ambassador for LPCUWC on a local, regional and international stage, and will have the skills to contribute to the wider UWC movement, building strong relationships with the Board and potential donors and with the other 17 Colleges in the UWC movement. A genuine resonance with the UWC mission and values is essential, together with an appreciation of the importance of student autonomy and authentic responsibility in shaping the life of the College.

Values and Vision

UWC-li Po Chun United World College aims to give an outstanding education to students from all around the world. It does not discriminate against the child’s background or religion. It teaches people to be tolerant and show kindness towards others. There are activities outside of school hours to help the students develop personal, social and moral skills, not just academic knowledge. The EOTC programme allows children to learn by interacting and doing things, rather than just listening and reading. The hope is for the students to develop leadership skills and learn to take difficult tasks and turn them into something good. The pupils are encouraged to take part in extra-curricular activities. This includes climbing, hiking, camping and kayaking. Drama and arts clubs are also available. Pupils should take advantage of every opportunity that comes their way. The school holds cultural nights to help students learn and value everyone in the global, and local, community.
