Job overview

This is a wonderful opportunity to lead Drama in a very well-resourced department in a thriving independent school. The permanent role is for two days per week, in addition to production evenings, starting in either April 2021 or September 2021.

In the Lower Years (Nursery to Year 2), opportunities to perform on the stage are provided with the Nativities as directed by the Heads of Year. Drama workshops are organised by the CL for Drama in liaison with Heads of Year to support curriculum topics.  The CL oversees the long term planning and supports colleagues as required. Often the work is related to topics studied in class and the cross curricular approach is adopted for the productions where possible.  The CL teaches specialist Drama lessons to all Year 4 pupils and, in Upper Key Stage 2, all Drama lessons are taught within split Music/Drama lessons in Year 5 and Year 6.

The children in Year 4, 5 and 6 visit the Drama Hall for their lessons on a weekly basis and have access to a wide range of resources to develop their talents. The department is well resourced with a budget to support the delivery of the Drama curriculum and the Productions. Recent purchases have included props and costumes resources both that have been funded by the Parents’ Association.

The successful candidate will ideally have experience teaching Drama in a school environment and be a qualified teacher.  We are keen to recruit a creative thinker who possesses an evident passion for the subject and is able to express a keen desire to enthuse pupils and colleagues. They will enjoy working as part of a team and leading others, have a good sense of humour, and will maintain excellent working relationships with colleagues.

The current success of this outstanding department and the popularity of the subject with the boys and girls means that the new post holder would be taking over at a very opportune time. Our aim is to develop independent, lifelong learners who are well prepared for their next stage of learning and we are seeking someone who shares our aims.

Full details about the role, including a Job Description, Person Specification and how to apply can be found in the Candidate Information Pack.

About St George's Junior School

We are an independent Roman Catholic co-educational day school for pupils aged 3 to 11 years. We seek to inspire a love of learning and to encourage all to fulfil their aspirations and potential within an atmosphere of mutual respect and compassion. We strive to promote our Josephite tradition which encourages a strong sense of all belonging to one family which encompasses the wider world.

Our recent ISI Inspection report found that results in national test at age eleven have been excellent in relation to the average for maintained primary schools. Pupils’ attitudes to their work are excellent. They are interested in their studies and obviously enjoy the many and varied opportunities which the staff provide for them, both within and outside the classroom. The majority of pupils transfer to the senior school at age 11, with several each year being offered scholarships. Good, and often outstanding, teaching contributes to the high standards which the pupils achieve.

The pupils’ personal qualities are excellent and the emphasis on promoting the values of the Josephite tradition results in pupils who are well mannered, polite and welcoming. A sense of community pervades the whole school and pupils are proud to be part of it. They show high levels of confidence when conversing with adults and are able to express their opinions in discussions with increasing maturity as they move up the school. Staff, both teaching and non-teaching, provide an excellent level of pastoral care and their example leads to the happy and purposeful atmosphere found in all parts of the school.

The school benefits from the excellent examples set by the senior leadership team and their dedication to ensuring that the ethos of the school is upheld. Governors are fully committed to the school and by regular and informed discussion play an important role in its development. They visit regularly and those governors who are priests visit to celebrate the weekly mass. Governors take their legal responsibilities very seriously and ensure that all statutory policies and procedures are in place, meeting all regulatory requirements. Parents and pupils show overwhelming support for the school, its leaders and its staff.
