Job overview

Presfield High School and Specialist College is an oversubscribed and successful special school for students who have a diagnosis of Autism. We strongly subscribe to Dr Stephen Shores view that “if you have met one person with autism, you’ve met ONE person with autism”

The school is committed to providing the best opportunities for all of our students and benefits from the commitment, passion and energy of our staff.  We understand that each student is unique and we believe every child should have the opportunity to learn and experience new challenges in a supportive environment. We are looking to appoint an outstanding and dynamic leader who naturally inspires others and is passionate about teaching and its impact on learning. The successful candidate will be driven by a commitment to create the best possible educational opportunities for our students enabling them to make positive contributions to wider society.

Our students have a wide attainment range and achieve a wide range of accreditations including Entry Level, Level 1 and 2 qualifications and GCSEs. Unlike the majority of special schools, we offer a mainstream model in Key Stages 3, 4 and 5 while supporting social development and understanding of self and autism.

The successful candidate will work with the Head Teacher and the SLT in guiding the school in its next stage of development from good to outstanding. This is a broad role that will mostly be defined by the skills of the successful candidate but you will need to demonstrate a proven record of accomplishment in strategic leadership at a senior level. You will be a highly diplomatic individual and an exceptional communicator, capable of delivering results through outstanding, motivational leadership and teamwork.

If you are interested in this role with us and feel you have the skills needed to add value to our school, please visit www.presfieldschool.org (school/vacancies) for an information pack and a copy of our application form.

A completed application form accompanied by a covering letter addressed to Mr Mark Purcell (Chair of Governors) should reach the school no later than 9:00am on Monday 25th February 2019.

Closing date: Monday 25th February 2019 at 9.00am.
Interviews week beginning Monday 11th March

  • Wednesday 6th February 9:00am-12:00 noon

About Presfield High School and Specialist College

Presfield High School changes lives. We are a National Autistic Society accredited, oversubscribed school situated in Southport, Merseyside. All students have an EHCP  with ASC as their primary need. We are advocates of Dr Stephen Shore’s belief that “If you have met one child with autism you have met ONE child with autism”. This underpins all that we do and we are committed to challenging the stereotypical views that are often associated with Autism.

We passionately believe in empowering our students and their families to advocate for their individual needs to support them to make meaningful contributions to society and to gain employment if that is their chosen destination. This is demonstrated in our diverse curriculum that promotes an aspirational academic and social pathway. The school catchment area is predominantly Sefton with some students travelling from Lancashire.

We place as much emphasis on progress in social development as we do in academic progress. Our primary focus is to support students to increase their employability and  quality of life opportunities. Our curriculum changes with each cohort and is bespoke to the students needs. Several students follow individualised timetables. Our qualification suite continues to expand and includes Entry Level, Level 1, Level 2 and  GCSE qualifications. Extensive work is undertaken to prepare students for the rigours of public examinations whilst maintaining our emphasis on developing life skills.

The school receives additional support from a Speech and Language therapist, Parent Support Advisor, School Nurse and Occupational Therapy/Mental Health/Sensory Specialists. All students have a  sensory need assessment upon entry to the school. On a case by case basis, we run intervention programmes to support emotional and mental health issues, reading recovery, dyslexia, anger management and self esteem. We also have a dedicated Behavioral/Pastoral Support Team.
