Highbury Fields School is a truly special place in which to learn, teach and lead.  An 11 to 19 girls’ school, we serve a culturally rich, but often underprivileged, community and are fiercely determined that every child in our care will become a confident young woman, who is socially and academically accomplished.

The school’s 2016 ‘outstanding’ OFSTED report and 2019 progress 8 score of 0.82 have established our students’ reputation for academic excellence and we are highly regarded in the local community for our calm, focused learning environment.

However, we are neither complacent nor satisfied.  The school strives to be excellent in all aspects of its work but there are vital areas of our provision that are yet to meet our exacting standards or our ambitions for our students.   It is in this context that the school is seeking a talented and committed Deputy Headteacher, who has both the vision and determination to have a transformational effect on children’s lives.

The successful candidate will take strategic responsibility for a number of key subject areas and lead the school’s strategy for further improving the exceptional academic progress of our students.  They will be an analytical and highly visible senior leader, who has substantial experience of developing curriculum areas and improving academic standards through their development of learning and teaching.  They will have the ability to approach problems from different perspectives and the confidence to hit the ground running by improving and challenging the established practice of the school.  They will have:

  • A flexible and strategic approach to school leadership, with the ability to put ideas into practice and see them through to great effect
  • A precise understanding of effective learning, teaching and assessment and the skills to lead, monitor and evaluate the improvement of learning and teaching across the school
  • A track record of substantial and highly effective curriculum leadership, including leading and sustaining change in key areas of both the academic and wider curriculum
  • An acute sense of the importance of effective communication in uniting and leading all stakeholders

In addition to the specific responsibilities attached to the role, the successful candidate should anticipate a wide-ranging brief that will provide the opportunity to contribute to all areas of the school.

The position will be excellent preparation for headship and, given its significance, the attached person specification is drawn from the National Standards of Excellence for Headteachers.

Conversations about the school and the role are warmly welcomed and encouraged. If you would like to find out more about us, please contact Mary Mason, the Headteacher’s PA, by emailing mmason@highburyfields.islington.sch.uk .

Closing date for applications is Monday 19th April, 9am

Interviews are currently planned for Thursday 22nd and Friday 23rd April

To apply, please download the application form from the TES or school website and email it to: hr@highburyfields.islington.sch.uk

Please note the school does not accept CVs.

Highbury Fields School is committed to equal opportunities, safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff to share this commitment. An enhanced DBS check is required for the successful candidate.

About Highbury Fields School

Highbury Fields School community is united by a firm commitment to the values of mutual respect and tolerance.  Our school is a culturally rich community that reflects and celebrates the social diversity of London.  Whilst students are supported and encouraged in their individual talents and ambitions, Highbury Fields is characterised by a strong feeling of togetherness and this spirit permeates everything we do, whether it be in the classroom, on the sports field or on stage.

All in the Highbury Fields School community are deeply ambitious for our students and firmly believe that every child in our care can, and will, achieve social and academic excellence.   Our strength in understanding our students and developing them into safe, happy and confident young women is the cornerstone of our students’ success.  GCSE results are consistently in the top 5% of schools in the country for progress and our sixth formers have all progressed to university or further training for the last five years.  Many of these students read their degrees at Russell Group universities.

We are dedicated to truly knowing every child in our care and our ethos enables students to enjoy their learning, challenge themselves and to think creatively.  As a consequence, Highbury Fields students are determined but compassionate; independent but community minded.  They understand both local and wider society and are ready to contribute to both.
