Job overview

We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and experienced workshop tutor technician to join our friendly and successful team from September 2019.  Applicants will need exceptional personal making skills and the passion and stamina to support motivated students in a busy and popular department. Bedales is an innovative co-educational HMC boarding school with a strong tradition in the creative arts.

Our school is a unique educational establishment, set in the beautiful Hampshire countryside. Our aim is to create an environment where questioning, divergent thinking and freedom to learn from mistakes are all encouraged. Central to our success is the sense that each person is a member of our community whose voice is entitled to be heard and treated with respect. Both our staff and students expect of each other the best kind of relationships – co-operative, authentic and trustful.

The role of tutor technician at Bedales involves both working directly with the students as they make independent progress in a ‘front of house’ capacity whilst also the all-important background work to ensure the workshop is a safe, well-resourced and efficient working space. The tutor technician will often be the departmental expert on a particular making process and be a vital element in the successful design and manufacture of student coursework. The tutor technician will directly instruct students not only how to safely use tools and machinery but how to skilfully produce high quality outcomes.

The successful candidate will have good basic practical skills and be confident in a workshop environment, qualified to use a range of machinery and have the ability to prepare and process materials. In addition they will either have a very high level of practical ‘craft’ based hand skills with an interest in developing skills in computer based manufacture using CNC routers and 3D printers or a high level of CAD and CAM competence and a willingness to enhance their personal making and craft skills across a range of material areas in order to support both aspects of the work of the department. Whilst much of our work is in wood, we also have good metal processing facilities including centre lathes, a milling machine, TIG welding, brazing and casting facilities. We also work in composites and have a well-equipped spray bay. The successful candidate would be encouraged to broaden their personal expertise to cover all these areas with training available either in house or through offsite courses.

The success of the department has been built on a team of highly motivated, creative and flexible staff that work closely together, putting a positive pupil experience at the heart of everything they do. The successful candidate must be willing to adopt this ethos and thrive in a collegiate environment.

Benefits

Our benefits include onsite parking, free school lunches during term-time, life assurance, pension and personal accident cover.
