Job overview

Director of English

Do you want to work in a school where there is a recognition that English teaching has a clear moral purpose?  Are you keen to develop your leadership potential in a community that celebrates words; their importance, their power, and their sheer joy?

QES is a school with a culture of high expectations, energy and enthusiasm and we are looking for a talented and committed individual keen to lead a highly successful department with strong-minded, capable and supportive colleagues. Director of English is a crucial strategic post for us with plenty of potential for someone interested in whole school leadership.

Bordering the Lakes and the Dales and yet surprisingly well connected, for over 400 years QES has forged a strong community ethos providing ‘Scholarship and Care’. We’re immensely proud of our commitment to the highest quality teaching and learning coupled with extraordinary pastoral care.  We are a truly comprehensive school in which every child is cared for, supported and stretched, moving on to diverse destinations, from local apprenticeships and college courses to highly selective universities.

Building on our long successful history, we launched our sister school QEStudio this September, alongside a new umbrella body, the Lunesdale Learning Trust. So these are exciting times to join us.   Within this expanding context we can offer ample opportunities for professional development enabling you to fulfil your potential in our high performing, forward thinking community.

Applications are welcomed from well-qualified and highly motivated individuals who are keen to work with remarkable young people promoting the life changing power of this subject providing exceptional education for all.

If you wish to apply, please complete all sections of the application form by 22nd January 2018. In your supporting statement we would like you to include:

  • an outline of your relevant experience
  • a discussion of the personal and professional qualities which you believe suit you for this post
  • a statement as to why this particular job appeals to you.

We would encourage all potential applicants to read all the attached documents and to browse our school website to get a fuller flavour of life at this very special place – click here for our website homepage

I do hope you will take the time to apply. QES is a marvellous school in which to work and this is a very exciting opportunity. I look forward possibly to meeting you in the near future.

Cathy O’Neill, Headteacher

Interviews to be hled week beginning 29 January 2018.

About Queen Elizabeth School

Queen Elizabeth School (QES), Kirkby Lonsdale, is an 11-18 co-ed, non-denominational, all ability school with a sister school, QEStudio, with its own building.   We serve a large, prosperous and beautiful area of South Lakeland, North Yorkshire and North Lancashire. Although a rural school, we are only 6 miles from the M6 and well connected to main line train stations, which helps explain the outward-looking vibrancy of Kirkby Lonsdale.

Queen Elizabeth School dates back to 1591 when we were granted our charter to provide ‘Scholarship and Care’, a promise we continue to deliver well into the 21st century.

In September 2017 QES developed as the Lunesdale Learning Trust to incorporate a new Free School, the QEStudio providing high quality professional, technical and vocational learning to over 300 14-18 year-olds. This is an innovative and exciting aspect of our provision in Key Stage 4 and 5 it is proving to be extremely popular with pupils and parents.

Executive Headteacher

Cathy O'Neill

Values and vision

Most significantly the Trust is founded on core values which underpin and inform the life of the schools and promote our sense of community.  These include the focus on encouraging global citizenship, remembering that life is about more than material things, looking out for others, and thinking of others who are less fortunate.

Ofsted report

"This outstanding school fully lives up to its ancient motto of ‘Scholarship and Care’. The excellence that the school achieves results from the equal emphasis given to each of these aspects of its work. Parents and students are overwhelming in their praise of the school and many count themselves fortunate to be a part of it. Pressure for places is high because of the school’s excellent reputation in the locality and further afield."
