Job overview

We are seeking to appoint a dynamic individual to the new post of Director of Finance which has been created to add a business and operational dimension to our Leadership Team.

The Director of Finance will provide overall strategic and operational leadership and management for all aspects of finance, HR, ICT, administration and operational support and be responsible for overseeing community access and use of the school site. This may include project management of significant capital works in the future. The school is fortunate in having highly skilled staff leading many of these areas and the postholder will not require expertise in all of the aspects of our work. However the postholder will be expected to be highly competent and to lead in the key area of finance.

In the current uncertain financial climate within the education sector it is important that all financial resources are deployed efficiently and effectively, observing the need to demonstrate value for money (VFM) and to support the school in achieving the very best educational outcomes for its students. This will be a core responsibility for the successful candidate. There is an expectation that the Director of Finance will proactively seek to secure additional funding streams from both charitable and government sources as appropriate.

As an integral part of the School Leadership Team it will be necessary for the postholder to attend governor meetings and contribute to discussions about the future strategic direction of the school.

There will also be line management responsibilities associated with this role including the HR Manager, Site Manager, Network Manager, and two finance administrators. In addition the postholder will have a responsibility for the oversight of all support staff including contracted catering and cleaning staff.

First established in 1589, Queen Elizabeth’s High School is a grammar school located in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire. The school has existed in its current guise as a co-educational grammar school since 1983, when the two single-sex schools merged into a single institution. A state grammar school, Queen Elizabeth’s is academically selective in its admissions but charges no fees for tuition. With around 1200 pupils on roll in a co-educational setting aged 11-18, the school is noticeably larger than most secondary schools, around 150 of these residing in the school sixth form. Queen Elizabeth’s has seen extensive modernisation and development over the years.
