Liverpool College is seeking to appoint an experienced and innovative school finance expert to replace the current post holder, who will retire in December 2021 after seven years of outstanding service.  

Liverpool College is an oversubscribed and growing 4-19 day and boarding Academy with over 1500 pupils and almost 200 employees.  It made the transition from fee paying to academy status in September 2013.  In the last few years, it has become one of the most over-subscribed schools in the North of England.   

Liverpool College was judged as Outstanding in all areas at its last Ofsted inspection in November 2019.  Its boarding provision also received an Outstanding rating in March 2020.  

The Director of Finance will be the Chief Financial Officer of the Trust and lead a small team of finance staff.  Reporting directly to the Principal, he or she will be responsible for the school’s financial management, planning and compliance as well providing expert financial advice to support core business services and entrepreneurial and income-generation activities.  

The Director of Finance has a significant strategic and operational role at the school and will be a key contributor to the successful development and implementation of strategies and policies which deliver an exceptional and transformative education to pupils. 

This is a developmental role and there may be opportunities for the Director of Finance to offer other skills and experiences, which is reflected in the salary range associated with the post.  These additional duties may include responsibility for human resources, general school administration, building and estates management and health and safety management.

JOB SUMMARY

The successful candidate will: -

-  Support the work of the Vice Principal: Operations in the delivery of core business services, organisational efficiency and income-generation activities

-  Promote and deliver good financial management so that public money is safeguarded at all times and used appropriately, economically, efficiently and effectively to support the best possible educational provision.

-  Be flexible to adapt quickly to the changing needs of the school

-  Develop, maintain and monitor a financial plan that indicates trends, points out requirements and risks, and sets out clear forecasts for future budgets.

-  Be responsible for the financial management and control of any project work, including capital projects, working with the VP Operations to ensure any works are delivered in line with the planned project budget.


Essential qualifications and experience: -

-  A professional qualification in finance or accounting

-  Degree or equivalent

-  Experience of working in a school/educational setting in a financial management role

-  Experience of leading and managing a team within an area of finance or audit

-  Strong understanding of the funding, financial management arrangements and reporting requirements of Academies and Trusts

-  Knowledge of pay and pensions frameworks for both teachers and support staff

-  Strong IT skills, including the ability to use MS Office software packages and computer-based accounting packages

-  Ability to manage and prioritise a varied and complex workload as well as delivering to timescale

-  Understanding of the importance of promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children

Liverpool College is a mixed ability 4-19 Academy of some 1500 pupils. The College is situated on a leafy 28 acre campus located in the Mossley Hill area of Liverpool adjacent to Sefton Park.

The College is organized into two phases and five schools:

The Primary Phase consists of the Pre-Prep (Reception-Year 2) and Preparatory School (Year 3-Year 6) and each are housed in their own buildings.

The Secondary Phase consists of the Senior School (Middle School (Years 7-9) and Upper School (Years 10-11)) and the Sixth Form (Years 12-13) which share classroom facilities. The Sixth Form also has its own centre.

The leadership of the College consists of the Principal of the College who is supported by two Vice Principals who have whole College responsibility for teaching, learning and curriculum, and mission, resources, assessment and policy oversight respectively, and by the Director of Finance and Operations who is responsible for the financial management and support operations of the College.

The Principal, Mr van Mourik Broekman, was appointed in 2007 and has been in post since 2008.

The College was founded in 1840 to serve the growing population of Liverpool. The College was a founding member of the Headmaster’s Conference and was a fee paying school until 2013. It is a Church of England foundation that has always been open to pupils and families of all faiths and none. It does not apply any faith criteria in its pupil admissions or staff recruitment policy.

In June 2012, Liverpool College announced that the Secretary of State for Education had accepted their submission to transition the College to Academy status.

In September 2013, Liverpool College became an all-through academy for pupils aged 4 to 19 years old. The College also offers state boarding provision. In the last few years, it has become one of the most over-subscribed schools in the North of England.
