Job overview

Abberley Hall is a co-educational school which takes children from the age of 2½ to 13. The Prep school (age 8 to 13) is predominantly a boarding school. The Nursery and Pre-prep departments are for day pupils only. It operates in and around a Victorian country house which is set on a hillside amongst 98 acres of woodland. The site is a mix of historic buildings, modern classrooms, sporting and arts facilities. These are all connected by corridors and lots of stairs.

The safety and wellbeing of pupils is of paramount importance, and Abberley Hall has strict policies and procedures in place to mimimise any element of risk. All staff are obliged to familiarise themselves with the School’s Safeguarding Policy and abide by its requirements.

Duties

The post of Director of Music at Abberley Hall is offered from 1st September 2018 and presents an exceptional opportunity to work with an outstanding staff in a school that views Music and the expressive and performing arts as a fundamental part of a child’s development.

Abberley Hall is committed to meeting the individual needs of each child and the contribution of music making to the emotional, social and expressive development of the children is recognised and highly valued, as is the sheer joy of performing and playing together.

Over two hundred pupils have individual instrumental lessons and these are taught by the Director of Music and a team of eleven highly qualified visiting staff.

Facilities

The Music School has a well-equipped space which comprises of twenty two practice rooms, a teaching studio, rehearsal spaces and teaching rooms. Nearly every room has a modern and well-maintained upright piano and there are designated rooms for percussion, guitar and electric keyboards.

There is a grand piano in the main teaching room and recently refurbished Bechstein Grand in the main school hall. The school also has a Chapel in which there is a versatile two manual and pedal pipe organ.

The Director of Music

The role of the Director of Music is to provide leadership to the whole department, fostering the development of music-making throughout the school.

Specialist taught timetabled ‘Class Music’ represents only a small proportion of the musical activity within the School but provides the core curriculum for all children. Extra-curricular group music and instrumental teaching provide the opportunity for each child to develop his or her music making at an appropriate level.

The Director of Music should expect to teach a number of lessons per week and extra-curricular activities.

Visiting Music Teachers

Much of the extra-curricular musical life of the school is dependent upon the services of a large body of excellent self-employed Visiting Music Teachers.

· Visiting Music Teachers also contribute significantly to the group music making within the school, all of which is made available to children free of charge.

· The overall management of the programme of extra-curricular opportunities for the children, including individual instrumental lessons, falls to the Director of Music.

Pupil Development

The Director of Music would expect to acquire, maintain and communicate a thorough knowledge of the children’s musical needs and to take a pastoral interest in their overall welfare as musicians and children. Likewise, the Director of Music acts as the means of communicating significant pastoral information between the VMTs and the teaching and pastoral staff of the school.

It should be noted that the above does not reflect a complete list of duties.
