Job overview

Exciting opportunity for an outstanding musician to join one of the leading schools for music in the UK and play a pivotal role in our vision to be the foremost school for music in the 21st Century.

Uppingham School’s musical pedigree and history is well-known. Being the first school to appoint a Director of Music in 1865, the School has an enviable music programme. Our pupils have the opportunity to play music every day of the week and many Uppinghamians aspire for excellence in their musical disciplines. As Director of Music, with your creativity and ambition, you will have the opportunity to take our musical reputation beyond Uppingham School.

Accountable for the vision, quality, delivery and effectiveness of the School’s musical programme, you will lead and manage the full-time and visiting members of the Music Department, oversee the planning and delivery of all musical events, and construct and articulate the vision for the ongoing development of Music at Uppingham.

Although demanding, the position is intensely rewarding. Because we are a busy boarding school, the opportunities to work with pupils are extensive and rich and we have a very exciting programme of weekly recitals, ability-led concerts, masterclasses and larger public performances in the UK and abroad that offer pupils of all levels opportunities to perform.

Facilities are excellent; with three buildings forming the Music School, offering excellent recording, recital, teaching and practice facilities. 60 practice rooms, numerous grand pianos and three organs facilitate a wide range of activities.

If you believe you have the skills and experience to establish and articulate an exciting vision for the onward development of Music at Uppingham we would be delighted to hear from you.

Uppingham School offers several benefits such as a pension scheme, a 50% contribution to premiums for the School’s private health scheme, as well as free membership of the School’s dual-use Sports Centre (pro-rated discount for part-time colleagues) and a school fee discount scheme for children of staff.

Closing date: Monday 29th October 2018.

“Pupils demonstrate positive attitudes towards work and study. They have good literacy skills at all ages and articulate ideas and opinions fluently. Work is generally presented neatly and pupils’ note-taking is effective. They develop good numeracy skills and their capacity to think critically is notable. Creative abilities are well developed and their exploration of ideas is particularly marked in their enrichment activities. Pupils’ study habits are good. In the lessons observed, pupils worked very well with each other, and also worked well independently. They enjoy their work and this stems in part from the good-natured atmosphere in lessons. Pupils use information and communications technology (ICT) proficiently.”
