Job overview

King’s College London Mathematics School (KCLMS) promotes a sense of belonging and nurtures the natural talent of students with a particular aptitude and enthusiasm for mathematics. The school aims to widen participation in mathematical degrees and careers at the very best universities and institutions.

Sponsored by King’s College London, it is a small school of up to 150 students that recognises there are many talented students who enjoy and are good at mathematics who could benefit from being part of the KCLMS mathematical community.

This new Director of Outreach post results from the school’s recent decision to expand its outreach activity and thereby the positive work and influence of KCLMS. The school is very aware of some entrenched national inequalities: for example, students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds achieve less well in GCSE Mathematics than their peers and progress into A Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics in relatively low proportions. The school is committed to enabling such students to thrive and succeed in their mathematical journey: that is what their outreach programme is all about.

This post represents a unique opportunity for a knowledgeable and passionate mathematics teacher who has experience of school leadership to take on an enterprising, broad-ranging role that has the potential for significant impact on the lives and life chances of young people with a love for mathematics.

About King's College London Mathematics School

King’s College London Mathematics School is a state school for students aged 16-19 with a particular aptitude and enthusiasm for mathematics. It was opened in September 2014 by King’s College London in response to the government’s programme to improve the supply of good mathematicians, engineers, physicists and computer scientists into our best universities, and aims to provide challenging and stimulating teaching by outstanding teachers, especially for students who would otherwise not have access to this quality of teaching. The school is committed to developing well-rounded young people and engages students in a rich extended curriculum that enables their personal development alongside their academic development.

King’s College London Mathematics School’s has 140 students split between year 12 and year 13. There is a selective admissions procedure involving a mathematics aptitude assessment as well as an interview. The process favours candidates for whom the school is likely to make the greatest impact on their futures. The school is based in Lambeth, within walking distance of Lambeth North and Waterloo stations.
