Job overview

We are seeking a dynamic, hard-working and inspirational Head of PE to become our first Director of PE and Sport. William Edwards School is a large, highly successful and oversubscribed mixed 11-16 school. It is the strategic lead school for the Thurrock Teaching School Alliance and is part of the growing South West Essex Community Education Trust. Pupil outcomes across the school are significantly above the national average and the school has been judged to be ‘outstanding’ since 2010.

This post provides an excellent opportunity for an outstanding candidate to develop their career further within the context of a very successful, harmonious and thriving secondary school with truly outstanding sports facilities. Up to 10% of our intake are admitted via sports aptitude and a sporting ethos runs through the heart of the school.

William Edwards has developed a national reputation for sport and we are seeking an experienced colleague to take us to the next level. Areas of responsibility will include: • Strategic oversight and direction of the PE department at William Edwards. • Responsibility for the development of pedagogy across the PE department. • Working at wider Trust level to develop community sports pathways and projects and to be instrumental in the design and development of the Community Sports Hub at the Trust’s new Free School, the Orsett Heath Academy. • To work with the Learning through Sport coordinator to develop the curriculum offer across the Trust.

A strong track record of improving student outcomes and participation through outstanding leadership of a PE department is a requirement for the post. We will provide a supportive environment along with excellent professional development opportunities.

SWECET is a growing, cross phase Multi Academy Trust, established in 2015 to serve the needs of its communities.  SWECET currently has three ‘Good’ primary schools, one ‘Outstanding’ secondary and one ‘RI’ Secondary that joined the Trust in April 2017.   The Trust believes that schools should be unique and individual institutions with distinct character and that through effective partnership we can challenge, support and learn from each other in order to raise standards and provide exceptional opportunities for all our young people.   It is an exciting time to be joining SWECET with all schools continually striving to be better. Considered, purposeful growth plans are in place that will be to the benefit of all stakeholders. We were invited by the DfE as an approved sponsor to submit applications to open a new Primary Free School in Havering and Secondary Free School in Thurrock. These are both due to open in 2020.
