Job overview

Welbeck – The Defence Sixth Form College

Director of Sport and the Co-Curriculum

The College is seeking to appoint a well-qualified, experienced and dynamic individual to join the Extended Leadership Team at our purpose-built residential Sixth Form College near Loughborough from September 2019.

The successful applicant will take responsibility for developing and enhancing our important, and highly-regarded, sports and co-curricular programme.  You will play a key part in helping to develop the College’s future strategy in this and other areas.   Applicants should be suitably qualified and experienced dynamic sports coaches, able to coach College sport to a high level, and have taught PE to 16-18 year old students.  You will be expected to contribute significantly to the delivery of PE within the curriculum timetable, and also to the sport, activities and the wider personal development of students.

In leading these areas you will have responsibility for the development of up to 360 male and female students who have been preselected to join the armed forces or the MOD civil service.  You will also have proven experience in pastoral matters, excellent leadership and people-management skills.  Knowledge of boarding schools and an understanding of the military aspects of Welbeck College will be an advantage.  For the right applicant there might be the potential for an additional resident pastoral role within a boarding house.

This is an exciting opportunity and we are keen to attract applicants seeking their first senior leadership role, whose experience might not, as yet, cover all aspects of the role.  It would also suit someone who is keen to develop the depth of experience in preparation for deputy headship.

This is for a two year fixed term contract and the appointment will be suitably compensated on band L13 of the leadership scale, from £53,724.

Welbeck – The Defence Sixth Form College is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. The successful applicant will be subject to checks by the Disclosure and Barring Service.

Located in Loughborough, Leicestershire, Welbeck Defence Sixth Form College is a co-educational sixth form college, primarily focused on providing education to students looking to enter the British Armed Forces or the civil service. The college was established in 1953, and moved onto its current site in 2005. An independent institution, the college charges fees for study, and sets a minimum academic standard for entry based on GCSE results, however many students looking to enter the Armed Forces will receive sponsorship from the Ministry of Defence, resulting in drastically lower fees. The vast majority of the college’s students are boarders, some 300 in total.

Values and Vision

As a college heavily focused on preparing students for life in military or government service, Welbeck Defence runs a curriculum primarily built around STEM subjects, with sponsored students being well supported through their transition into higher education and eventually the Armed Forces. Outside of the college's academic focus, as a boarding school Welbeck works hard to foster a sense of community among its pupils, with extensive opportunities for relaxation and socialisation.

ISI Inspection

“The college successfully fulfills its aims, including offering to all students a range of opportunities so that they can achieve to the best of their ability within a framework of shared values and standards. The quality of the students’ achievements in their academic work and in their activities is excellent. Students are successful in public examinations. All students including those with SEND or EAL make good progress.”
